Time Synchronisation with NTP

Yesterday I discovered that KENIC has set up a NTP Server, ntp.kenic.or.ke, at KIXP "to provide a date and time integrity for computers". Reading more about time synchronisation with NTP on the Ubuntu help pages ( https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html) this line jump out at me: This page describes methods for keeping your computer's time accurate. *This is useful for servers, but is not necessary (or desirable) for desktop machines. *(emphasis own) Why would it not be desirable for desktop machines? What are the disadvantages to regularly checking your clock on a desktop as opposed to a server? -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

The fact that it may not necessarily be online always may be one. By the way ntp.kenic.or.ke is more that 3 years old. -----Original Message----- From: Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks Mailing List <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: [Skunkworks] Time Synchronisation with NTP Date: Wed, 9 Jun 2010 07:58:52 +0300 Yesterday I discovered that KENIC has set up a NTP Server, ntp.kenic.or.ke, at KIXP "to provide a date and time integrity for computers". Language! 'Necessary' is the main point -> chances are that you are not running stuff on your laptop that require time to be accurate to within say 10s. -- Josiah Mugambi On Wed, Jun 9, 2010 at 7:58 AM, Daudi Were <daudi.were@gmail.com> wrote:

On the contrary i would argue the contrary -- there is a lot of fraud that can be carried out by changing the system dates on PCs. Having the time automatically corrected is a big benefit On Wed, Jun 9, 2010 at 8:43 AM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

Ah so if I was fastidious about the system time on my desktop there would be no harm with constant synchronisation? Then the words "or desirable" on the help page are just unnecessary as they imply some negative reaction! -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

The better question is, do you always require your watch to read/show accurate time? If yes, then why? and why not your computer? ntp.kenic.or.ke has been there for some years now, and was a great relief for some sysadmins in KE. I once was.
