Yesterday I discovered that KENIC has set up a NTP Server, ntp.kenic.or.ke, at KIXP "to provide a date and time integrity for computers".

Reading more about time synchronisation with NTP on the Ubuntu help pages (https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/NTP.html) this line jump out at me:

This page describes methods for keeping your computer's time accurate. This is useful for servers, but is not necessary (or desirable) for desktop machines. (emphasis own)

Why would it not be desirable for desktop machines? What are the disadvantages to regularly checking your clock on a desktop as opposed to a server?

The better question is, do you always require your watch to read/show accurate time? If yes, then why? and why not your computer?
ntp.kenic.or.ke has been there for some years now, and was a great relief for some sysadmins in KE. I once was.
