Hi All, I need a CRT repaired - I think its the power transformer that has gone kaput! Anyone knows where I can take it? Thanks

@Geofrey : Thnks for the trip down memory lane.... ( what was google then.... ) :-)) So are you looking for an HT transformer? Pls get the correct one as it not only powers the "filaments" in the CRT but also provide upto 25Kv to the tube. These filaments provide the cathode/anode acceleration, which in turn bombards the screen RGB phospers and the RGB plates. Pls remember the CRT is a vacuum and dangerious to handle. To repair an old CRT, basically the filaments would collect oxides, so we guys used to use a Variable transformer to boost the current just enough. Warning, too much current and Kwaheri CRT! lol! The days tech used to be easy.... You can "rewind" the transformer if you think the repair's worth it. Rgds. On Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 3:56 AM, Geofrey Karani <jeffkarani@gmail.com>wrote:

Please do not google for answers to questions below : shame on anyone who does. Search engines are killing creativity :-)))))))) Question 1 : Since the CRT is a vacuum, if subjected to sudden physical shock, will it implode or explode? Question 2 : Why is the front of CRT screen thicker ( at least 1 inch ) while the rest is delicate glass? Question 3 : Is it true that the phosperous material can get magnetised and change colour display and what is the remedy? Over to you listers. Take your CRT to a guy called Muritu, 0721200732 he's very competent and charges fairly. Old Nation Roundabout where u board mats za limuru.

kwani this list ni google generation peekee? Catchup in a few weeks time. lol! :-)) On Fri, Feb 19, 2010 at 8:47 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Hi Aki, Since Question 1 : Since the CRT is a vacuum, if subjected to sudden physical shock, will it implode or explode? Answer: Implode. Question 2 : Why is the front of CRT screen thicker ( at least 1 inch ) while the rest is delicate glass? Answer: There is an aquadag coating that is not present anywhere else and its only the front that is being 'hit' by accelerated electrons. Question 3 : Is it true that the phosperous material can get magnetised and change colour display and what is the remedy? Answer: Presence of strong EMF derails the electrons from their path hence discolouration. Most modern CRT circuits have a degauss circuit which is responsible for rectifying this. Degauss and your colour comes back. Regards
