After how long does it go off? Do you have good signal coverage in your area? Does this happen while on EDGE or HSDPA? To prevent my modem from going off during periods of inactivity(so that I can reach it on the same public IP away from home/office), I maintain a continuous ping to some URL/Public host. Sometimes my application fails to work and I want to reach while away, so I ensure that the modem doesn't become idle. You can tell a modem is idle by the intensity of the blue(3G) or green(EDGE) light. Low intensity denotes inactivity; bright/strong intensity means its active DL/Uplinking stuff. To save on the scarce radio resource, mobile operators have an IDLE timer that deactivates an idle session. bernard On Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 1:22 PM, Nick Wambugu <nick.wambugu@gmail.com>wrote:

Hogging that is "To save on the scarce radio resource, mobile operators have an IDLE timer that deactivates an idle session" as put, Now the question is when you are downloading the line s not Inactive so why terminate? I think and I stand to be corrected 1. weak signal can lead to connection timeout 2. congestion can lead to Line tripping 3. check the modem usb drivers or you usb ports they may be malfunction (change port or computer to prove theory) On Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 2:17 PM, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

Mickey, you are on point. That is the reason I began by asking whether the area has poor signal (EDGE/3G) coverage. Its very natural that a poorly covered area will lead to call/data drops. On the other hand, perhaps the problem is local on the OS/ application being used, modem hardware, etc. You can test by changing modems and/or tether your phone. The ZTE modems were very notoirious on dropping connection on my ubuntu box. bernard On Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 3:56 PM, Mickey Mickey <michaelakunga@gmail.com>wrote:

I have been experiencing drops whenever the Safaricom modem changes frequencies eg by moving from UMTS to HSPDA. Also there where 2 days last week that the modem kept disconnecting even when in use. I suspect its a problem on the safcom network side becasue i was experiencing the problem in the same location yet it was not there for other days. Hi, If the modem keeps disconnecting, there should be a simple script that can re-establish it instantly (redial) and keep things running. Kind regards, Bernard On Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 7:49 PM, Memusi <tonatech@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi,
You can ease the download pain by using a download manager, if you are not already doing so. Works for 80% of the cases and saves your time and data bundle. The auto resume feature will also reduce your frustration levels.
