To prevent my modem from going off during periods of inactivity(so that I can reach it on the same public IP away from home/office), I maintain a continuous ping to some URL/Public host. Sometimes my application fails to work and I want to reach while away, so I ensure that the modem doesn't become idle. You can tell a modem is idle by the intensity of the blue(3G) or green(EDGE) light. Low intensity denotes inactivity; bright/strong intensity means its active DL/Uplinking stuff.
To save on the scarce radio resource, mobile operators have an IDLE timer that deactivates an idle session.

I need to keep my MODEM on permanently as long as I have loaded it, but it keeps going off sometimes even in the middle of a download. How do I do this?
