I've always live with the principle that just go on living your life, if you pre-occupy yourself with "my rights" and so called "my privacy", you will miss the little things to enjoy about life itself. And whether you shout from the rooftops, these kind of technology will be there and 'bad' people will use them whether you have a right to privacy or not My 2 cents ./Ok3ch On Fri, Jan 8, 2016 at 11:14 AM, Mutinda Kitana via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Well, it is and it isn't. Our Rights, as you put it, are rather fickle. In the event of a terrorist attack, we will quickly be pro-surveillance. In the event of our rather "sensitive" pictures getting leaked, we will be quick to lynch the surveillance system. The only thing left to do, in my opinion, is smell the roses, take pictures of sunsets, eat at any eatery that tickles my fancy, experience exotic cultures wherever they lead and generally, be alive. I dare say that that is my only responsibility, that and not being a threat to security. In any case, as long as you are a citizen of anywhere, you have limited rights and freedoms as it is. this is merely my opinion, mine and that of the creatures in my head. Now, smile, big brother is watching. Caveat: for big brother to watch you, you have to be interesting enough. If he isn't watching then you, my friend, are simply dull and should start watching cartoons as soon as you possibly can. On Fri, Jan 8, 2016 at 11:30 AM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

@Peter, what you say holds true. However, privacy has been so eroded already, the few who care about it can do little. Fighting seems more futile, It's just easier to life in the full knowledge that BigBrother is always watching you somehow, somewhere. Consider what has been disclosed about gov spying, telecom companies, service providers eg Google, intrusive mobile apps (thank you ignorant users). Now, try undo all that damage... -- On Fri, Jan 8, 2016 at 11:30 AM, Peter Karunyu via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I've distilled my angle on this story to: Governments nowadays seem to want to monitor us more and more for various reasons. I'm sure they're celebrating as technology like the Soloshot becomes available to the common mwananchi. No need to spend billions on CCTV installations, people are CCTV'ing themselves! Since I don't trust any government in this world I'd rather not help them track me. Let them do that on their own. I however don't have sleepless nights worrying; I've got stuff to do. @Eva and @Okechukwu, that mentality also is dangerous. If we don't really care about protecting "our rights", gradually, they will be eroded, and before you know it, those little things you used to enjoy, like watching youtube videos, will then become illegal.
What will you say then?
Do you suppose our fellow human beings in North Korea are enjoying life as much as we are?

My understanding is that the amount of data been generated by the internet of things has outstripped governments capacity to process. Government focus has then shifted to only processing data related to people of interest. Laws and conventions also exist to guide how this data can be accessed and processed. "People of interest" is fuzzy. Governments (and other powerful corporations/groups) do change whoever/whatever fits that profile. ""Laws and conventions" do indeed exist, but are largely ignored, or simply changed to exclude their application to "people of interest"... -- On Fri, Jan 8, 2016 at 11:39 AM, Alex Watila via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Is there evidence to support your response? It could be argued that advances in technology have made it even easier for big brother. If history is anything to go by then we know that 1) mass surveillance is open to abuse and 2) it doesn't protect the law abiding public On 8 Jan 2016, at 11:39, "Alex Watila" <awatila@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:

A friend gave me this analogy some years back. The sister was going through a rough relationship that was leading to a terrible divorce. The sister only confided to her, and did not want that information to spread. She is not doing anything wrong, but she would not like her privacy infringed. Consider also, would Safaricom want Orange or Airtel to get hold of their strategy? Would you want the whole world to know the disease you are suffering from? Imagine you are a politician seeking high office. Would you want you opponents get hold of your campaign strategy, your supporters, who you are meeting, where you are meeting them and what you are discussing? We should always fight for our privacy. In the security amendment act of 2014, the government of Kenya diluted many personal freedoms through surveillance and search without warrant, but luckily, the high court reversed some because they violated the Bill of Rights. I think the best model out there is the one run by Estonia. There all your information is available to the Government. You however have access to your info and who in the govt has access to it. So say somebody accesses your tax info yet you are not under investigation then you will know who has accessed it and you can confront them. In our case if somebody runs your plates you get a notification and unless it is part of an active investigation then you can rightfully demand to know why. I don't think access is the problem it is the transparency thats important. On Sun, Jan 10, 2016 at 10:27 PM, Mwendwa Kivuva via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
