Just read on the new smart buses being introduced in Nairobi in 2 weeks. Among the things that caught my attention were :- http://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/Local/Kenya-Smart-Buses-to-ease-traffic.html - “They will keep scheduled times so that you will know that at this bus stop, this bus will be here at this particular time,” - The Smart Buses will be using software that enables people to get more information about the routes and times of travel. You can even sms saying that this is the bus stop and it will tell you that the next bus is coming in the next many minutes - It will charge according to the distance charged Does anyone think it will work against the Mungiki infested transport sector Kevin Ouma

Its a great thing .... I hope guys in this list were involved .... anyone?? Question is if it will be sustained we had city hopper come and now they are no different to other mats.... 2009/5/28 Kevin Ouma <kevin.ouma@gmail.com>

I hate to wake up a thread about to die but, here goes... I think that we are looking at the whole traffic problem from the wrong perspective., that of a short-lived problem as opposed to a genetically flawed system/country/economy etc. The main problem is that all the 35 million Kenyans need to come to Nairobi for something,..administration, business, money or just simple development. (They may not all make it but they NEED to) It is this NEED to be in Nairobi that needs to be cured satisfactorily. However, as I said, the founders of the kenyan nation/system/economy were too paranoid to let the country grow outwards (far from their control) hence forced it to grow inwards (centralized control and mgt is easier to handle), thus the genetic flaw This actually made sense then,..put your eggs in one basket and watch the basket carefully. But the eggs begin to hatch, grow into chickens that lay more eggs etc etc. At this point it really doesn't matter whether you will put smart buses in the basket, build over-passes, fly overs, etc... it will FAIL as a satisfactory solution. Anybody will simply tell you to develop more baskets to hold the eggs. We need to push our resources as a country to develop (i mean real devt) other places. This means that if I reside in Nakuru I can get every thing that the person in Nairobi gets. Simple! That means a company can be set up in Machakos and do as well as its equal in Nairobi, etc. All the problems in Nairobi would go (housing, crime, traffic jams, lack of radio frequencies, low wages and high costs, the list is endless) Ever been stuck in traffic in Nakuru, Nyeri, Isiolo (etc)? My point exactly! On Thu, 2009-05-28 at 16:15 +0300, A. Mecca wrote:
