how to use the Orange ZTE modem on openSUSE 11.3 Gnome.

I have been trying for ages to use the Orange ZTE AC2726 USB EVDO Modem on openSuSE Linux 11.3 Gnome to connect to the internet. have edited the /etc/wvdial.conf file as follows [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0 Baud = 57600 Init1 = ATZ Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 Init3 = Area Code = Phone =#777 Username =card Password =mypassword Ask Password = 0 Dial Command = ATDT Stupid Mode = 1 Compuserve = 0 Force Address = Idle Seconds = 300 DialMessage1 = DialMessage2 = ISDN = 0 Auto DNS = 1 When I execute the wvdial command on the terminal the following error appears joey-suse:~ # wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Idle Seconds = 300, disabling automatic reconnect. --> Sending: ATDT#777 --> Waiting for carrier. Actually, you dont need to go through all that hussle. The ZTE modem comes with Linux drivers inside. If you insert it for the first time, it starts in USB mode and you can go into it and install the drivers. If you cant manage to load it that way, I can send you the ip with the drivers. Once you install the drivers, you will even get an app similar to the one available on windows where you can even check the account balance. I have been using that for some time now and its amazingly nice. On Wed, Feb 9, 2011 at 9:54 AM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

Tuma Barua on the link to the details on how to setup! There used to be a member of this list by the alias "Tuma Barua" or am I mixing things up? Where did he go? Maybe him and Claire Njoki went same direction? Without Claire, this list is a monotony of tech stuff, and I am not a techie (aaaall the tyyyme!) On this list there are serious people who consider themselves techies. The said could not distinguish Claire's humour from an EULA and they wrote to her instructing her off the list.

Thanks! Talking of operators who "care about their users", Safaricom has given a firmware update only once for their E160/E220 <http://www.safaricom.co.ke/index.php?id=246>. I've been hoping they could push Huawei to get them a firmware update for the E960, at least so that it can have an SMS interface like the B220. OTOH, I believe safaricom believes in partnership with Microsoft and so assumes there are no other OSes apart from Windows. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

BTW: https://forge.betavine.net/projects/bcm/ it works fine on ubuntu with the huawei e220, it just lacks the safaricom goodies, but i guess that could be implemented without too much hassle (and maybe a little input from safaricom) On Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 10:46 AM, Gichingiri Kuria <gmail@gichingiri.com> wrote:

ZTE modem drivers on linux? Modern distributions come with kernel modules to sort out this modem. All you need to add is usbmodeswitch an your good to go

Hi At this point you should know you are connected, if the allocated DNS does not work try using others. You can edit /etc/resolve.conf to add 4.2.2.1 (a public DNS server) or even add Access kenya, Safcom or any other providers, the DNS servers do not really matter. CONNECT --> Carrier detected.
