Hi guys, Who has used USPS to ship stuff to Kenya? Looking for information on lead time and also how they deliver: door step or post office box?

Last I purchased something from Ebay and shipped via USPS it never arrived, kept indicating as on transit in the tracking. Fortunately it wasn't a huge purchase. I shipped a nexus 7 tab an year ago. It was delivered to my postal address. It took only 7 days and I was charged an IDF fee of 5k (that was before the VAT bill was passed). On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Martin Gicheru <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

A contact sent me an item via USPS on Jan 29th and the package arrived within a week, as advertised. We used Express Shipping, going for $47 and has tracking + Insurance cover of upto $100. I collected it at EMS office, GPO. Below's the archived tracking link : https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction!input.action?tRef=qt&tLc=1&tLab... Tony.

Regarding the lead times, the options presented to us prior to shipping were : *Express Service :* Costs $47; Takes 1 week; has tracking; has insurance cover up to $100 *Priority Service :* Costs $47; Takes 2 weeks; has no tracking; has no insurance *First Class Service :* Costs $13; Takes 3 weeks; has no tracking; has no insurance (Add + $14 to make it registered) The package was less than 300g and the value was about $100. Hope that helps. Tony.

Correction : Priority service was quoted at $27 and not $47 as I wrote earlier. My bad! Tony.

Nothing has ever bugged me like VAT on electronic items, darn! On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

Regarding the notification upon arrival, I wasn't contacted when the package arrived despite what the tracker indicates (sigh!). With the tracking available, this wasn't much of an issue to me. I just went over to EMS office when I was sure the package was ready for collection. Tony.

@Thuo, you will have to present your tracking number to the EMS section of Posta. Just keep on tracking the parcel's movement. My postal address is at GPO, so I collected the package at the GPO EMS office. ( I had supplied my Postal Address as the delivery address) Tony.

Wait, you mean despite the fact that i have supplied the address to be delivered to my door-step i still have to collect at GPO? Or did you get impatient and intercepted it at GPO? Will they call me to pick it? Or now its my job since i paid them - they usual typical parastatal thing?

For my convenience, I gave my Postal Address as the delivery point. I'm not sure how yours will work out. On a good day EMS may give you a call aiming to deliver the package at your door-step (has happened to me once in the past) With our unreliable 'last mile' delivery infrastructure, you are well advised to be prepared to physically collect the shipment in person. I got no notification call with my last parcel..* *this*is*near*SPARTA!** Tony.

I'm also waiting since I don't know when exactly it'll clear from customs. Tony , Since you've been through this, is there a next step after "Your item is being processed by customs in KENYA" so that I don't go to the post office unnecessarily? @Alex, You have to wait until you get a *"**Customs clearance processing complete"* signal. In case you requested to pick up the item in person (read gave a Postal address), then you will further have to wait for *"**Arrival at Post Office" * signal. Otherwise, EMS guys should simply deliver it to the doorstep, assuming they'll be kind enough to notify you in advance. You can refer to my old tracker : https://tools.usps.com/go/TrackConfirmAction!input.action?tRef=qt&tLc=1&tLab... Tony.

@Thuo, I'm waiting to see how your case will turn out; especially if there are fees/duties to be paid. The grey part with door-step deliveries is the settlement of those statutory fees. When and to whom do you pay? - The boda-boda guy upon delivery? [?][?] - Do you still have to go to the EMS office to settle this, then head back to your station and wait for the package? That's how I find own-pick-up option more convenient for such cases. Tony.

@Tony - i actually gave a Westalands office address - in the first place i thought this USPS works like DHL. Now it hit me it isn't.
