List updates and announcements

Dear Skunkworks list members, We wish to take this opportunity to extend our sincere apologies for the outage experienced on the list in the past week. This was caused by reasons beyond our control after the hosting server was withdrawn from service for emergency maintenance and upgrades. Thus the lack of advance notice on the outage. We have since made some changes and setup alternative services that will continue to serve in case of future failures. Please take note of the following resulting points. o The new list now runs on a sub-domain lists.my.co.ke for easy migration outside the primary domain. The new list address is therefore skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke o As a result of the migration previous user specific settings were not maintained. Members who had such options i.e digest mode are requested to visit http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks and select their preferences once again. o We shall aim to restore the mail archives in due course and notify you accordingly. o Over time we observed that most yahoo.com email addresses were unsubscribed from the list due to delivery failures. We would wish to monitor this going forward and fix the issue if it persists. o We have further observed that the number of off-topic posts has increased. While we appreciate that the topics are of general interest to the community they are beyond the scope of the list in some cases. In an effort to maintain the lists focus, we have setup a bulletin board where such digressions can take place i.e http://my.co.ke/phpbb/ o lastly, we have introduced the skunkworks-announce list for announcements to list members i.e meetings etc to separate postings from normal traffic. In addition outages and similar announcements will be posted on the bulletin board and the blog http://blog.my.co.ke/ o Finally please visit www.my.co.ke for any further updates on new developments at skunkworks. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Penguinlabs for keeping the systems up and running. Next time you see Laban, Bob buy them a drink or just say thanks!. If you have free time and wish to volunteer your time to skunkworks, kindly let Phares Kariuki know, am sure he would be happy to help. Best Regards, Michuki on behalf of; Skunkworks Convenors.

Hi Mich, On another list that I manage, the problem with automatic unsubscription of yahoo\.* addresses also manifested itself. The reason appears to be the throttling algorithms applied by Yahoo! on their smtp servers to control junk mail. This phenomena has been discussed on several forums and it's been found that Yahoo arbitrarily throttles incoming SMTP connections. If you send a "burst" of mail to yahoo servers, this throttling is applied and it sometimes even leads to their servers giving error code 550. This cumulatively adds to the score mailman applies to a member's failure threshold, which ultimately makes Mailman to autounsubscribe the member's address. I use Exim as the SMTP server and somehow we (exim-users) agreed to send only a maximum of 5 messages per connection and this has saved us the agony from Yahoo! In exim, we do http://lists.exim.org/lurker/message/20080818.185617.b5534450.en.html. There must be a way of achieving the same using Postfix or any other sane MTA. Have had these issues with Yahoo and on nanog, someone suggested implementing SPF and DKIM and all his troubles with yahoo ended. On the verge of this implementation and hope it goes. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 11:50 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

I'll try that and see. It would seem to imply that the "throttling" is only applied to domains which haven't published SPF records and haven't implemented DKIM? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. Yes, that what was the thread implied, and somehow, after implementation, havent seen much issues with yahoo "throttling", though it also hasn;t been that long since implementation. On Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 3:57 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

Any suggestions from Gurus out there ?
Okechukwu must be running Postfix and should be in a position to help:-) My MTA of choice has always been Exim, fortunately or otherwise. I hope there are MTA gurus on this list, but again the wheel must already be out there. Google might help. Keywords - "postfix dkim spf". In the thread that Okechukwu mentioned, I see someone say that having your PTRs match the HELO/EHLO name of yout MTA should also help. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. While looking through lists for the same fix on postfix it seems to be a solution that works for some. Am just wondering if it would behave differently if the zone was signed? Regards, Michuki.
