Hey Guys I need to some information, what are the limitations of the cisco 1841 router? In terms of capacity, scaling and expansion. I also need much information on Cisco High end routers and Firewall/VPN devices besides the device product sheet is there anywhere can find this consolidated information? This is due to the expansions Im undertaking so good advice shall come in handy. Themburu -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Good Question Net Net I need to expand/scale my network for that I need adequate information on particular devices. What I also need to consider are network requirements for this design ie WANs , VPNs, remote access, Access Policies, Distribusion , Security etc. and mostly adapt to change or growth. -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Let us start with 1841--Very good router for a not so big office. It si an Intergrated Services Router(ISR) meaning supports several services, esp a modular one is vwey good for expansion purposes for u can use it for voice i.e as a callmanager instead of installing a legacy PABX,u can add a wireless module for the LAN. You can add a 3G module if your WAN is on a 3G platform, you can upgrade your IOS to an advanced security bundle, you can add IPS module for secutiry....I mean the router is goood and scalable. Hey Net Net True 1841 is an ISR rtr but used for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Im hoping to eventually have two ISP's for my server network such that if one ISP is down the other is active but thats a long term plan. I need a rtr soonest but I dont need to buy one then find that I need to replace it in 5 months due to expansion needs hence I was finding abt the 1841 - so are the 2800 ISR series the next above the 1800 series? Also besides the earlier outlined factors for network expansion design are there additional factors you would consider. Regards Themburu -- Conservatism is the adherence to the old tried against the new untried.

Well for whatever you have stated, what you need is redundancy/multihoming with 2 providers which means doing bgp on your network. For this,1841 is still good. But talk of 2800,then your are good to go and it take care of all the needs you stated earlier and more,so if your budget allows for a 2800,please have no other thought. Good Question Net Net
I need to expand/scale my network for that I need adequate information on particular devices. What I also need to consider are network requirements for this design ie WANs , VPNs, remote access, Access Policies, Distribusion , Security etc. and mostly adapt to change or growth.

Hey Net Net
True 1841 is an ISR rtr but used for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Im hoping to eventually have two ISP's for my server network such that if one ISP is down the other is active but thats a long term plan.

Hi For bgp,it is not a must for you to have your own AS number to have bgp running.Just talk to your ISPs and you can use a private AS number of your choice. This will work very fine On Sun, Nov 1, 2009 at 5:34 PM, George Njoroge <themburu@gmail.com> wrote:

Hey Net Net
True 1841 is an ISR rtr but used for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Im hoping to eventually have two ISP's for my server network such that if one ISP is down the other is active but thats a long term plan.

@George, The ISP should not charge you for allowing you set up bgp with,it is their duty to do so,but if you dont know how to set up on your end that is when they will charge to configure your end. Fo On Mon, Nov 2, 2009 at 1:09 PM, George Njoroge <themburu@gmail.com> wrote:

Hey Net Net
True 1841 is an ISR rtr but used for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Im hoping to eventually have two ISP's for my server network such that if one ISP is down the other is active but thats a long term plan.

I have also been thinking abt bgp for multiple ISP's but I dont think it is economical due the charges involved in getting an AS number. Have you ever run bgp, what are the resource requirements for a rtr?

I have also been thinking abt bgp for multiple ISP's but I dont think it is economical due the charges involved in getting an AS number. Have you ever run bgp, what are the resource requirements for a rtr?

Abt the rtrs how much are the 1841 and 2811 locally. I think I need atleast 4 HWIC's and 2 E1 cards and 2 Serial ports. Also what other high end ISR rotuers can I consider at this point?

Hey Net Net
True 1841 is an ISR rtr but used for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Im hoping to eventually have two ISP's for my server network such that if one ISP is down the other is active but thats a long term plan.

On the BGP issue, it really depends on WHY you want to run the protocol. If for instance you only connect to one ISP,are not connecting any clients then I suggest you don't run bgp with the ISP. It just complicates your life, probably for no added benefit; they'll probably just for ward a default route to you anyway. I say this because very few ISP's in Kenya actually even bother receiving the full internet routing tables. Even fewer need it. If its just for playing around with ( I saw something about BSCI) umm I guess you can use your discretion, but your ISP has to be willing to help you play. Hi
For bgp,it is not a must for you to have your own AS number to have bgp running.Just talk to your ISPs and you can use a private AS number of your choice. This will work very fine

Abt the rtrs how much are the 1841 and 2811 locally. I think I need atleast 4 HWIC's and 2 E1 cards and 2 Serial ports. @Net Net, the 1841 is a good router but can't support a call manager ie. CCME. An 1861 can for 15 users only but its not modular and rather expensive ($5495 GPL). @George, There many factors to consider when choosing a router: 1. No. of users in your LAN and bandwidth requirements? 2. Interfaces required to your ISP ie.HWIC? 3. If call manager is required, for how many users? 4. QoS required? Different routers and IOSs have different capabilities. In triple play enviroment, I would recommend QoS. 5. MPLS configurations required? Most providers using MPLS require to configure VRFs and BGP on your router. 6. Scalability plans? I hope this paint a good picture for you. *My favourite router is the cisco 2811. Its modular, can handle most HWICs, CCME can support 25 ip phones, QoS capable, can do VPNs (IPsec, GRE , MPLS) e.t.c On Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 10:17 AM, Net Net <bgp.peers@gmail.com> wrote:
Let us start with 1841--Very good router for a not so big office. It si an Intergrated Services Router(ISR) meaning supports several services, esp a modular one is vwey good for expansion purposes for u can use it for voice i.e as a callmanager instead of installing a legacy PABX,u can add a wireless module for the LAN. You can add a 3G module if your WAN is on a 3G platform, you can upgrade your IOS to an advanced security bundle, you can add IPS module for secutiry....I mean the router is goood and scalable.

Good Question Net Net
I need to expand/scale my network for that I need adequate information on particular devices. What I also need to consider are network requirements for this design ie WANs , VPNs, remote access, Access Policies, Distribusion , Security etc. and mostly adapt to change or growth.
