Hi guys. Any one with information of the repair situation of Teams? It's two Weeks since the cut and no official info is available!

Hi Job, Communication from TEAMs secretariat has been sent to the various providers periodically. Find the latest sent yesterday:- · The cable ship NIWA arrived at Salalah spares depot on 11-03-2012. · Preparations are now ongoing to load spare cable and jointing kits onto the ship · Cable mobilization for the Mombasa mission is expected on 12-03-2012 · So far we are still on schedule (cable ship expected to arrive at Mombasa on 18-03-2012, for 4 day repair works ending 23-03-2012, all going well) · We will continue to update regularly, at least every 48 hours. · Once again we thank you for your patience and understanding as we try our level best to repair the cable and restore full services asap. Best Regards……………..? Would it not have been faster to carry the cables on a Chopper ? I know that DHL is quite expensive; and they charge per Atom; But here we are speaking of two companies doing repairs at the same time; so they can cost share on air-lifting of a cheaper flying delivery service than DHL. Anywho; they know best.

@Stephen, The cable repair business is quite complicated. You see, you just don't need the cable, but the whole system including the ship. These are special type vehicle which carry out cable repair and the whole system is tied together including the cable and systems that carry out the repairs. The cable have to be part of the system, they can't be transported alone. And they are also quite bulky for air transport. Some more advance cable laying ships even do manufacture the cables on board and they go along their work.

Oooh; cool; now I know.. I thought they just needed the cables; a couple of deep sea divers armed with some pliers doing some trial and errors [?] BR/// SNN

Either way taking almost a month to repair the cable is a very long time.

I understand now the inland fiber linking kenya to seacom via KDN is cut as another company (with held) was laying cable. But will be up by 4pm. -- Regards, Job Njogu Muriuki, Phone: (+254) - 722906324 | 736333075 Skype: heviejob | Yahoo: heviejob Address: 42665 00100 Nrb

Anyone who knows whether repairs works are due to be completed tomorrow as earlier announced by TEAMS? They seem not to be so good at keeping the public informed on the status of repairs like Seacom usually does.

*They seem not to be so good at keeping the public informed on the status of repairs like Seacom usually does.* Understatement of the year!! On Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 2:08 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

You know fixes like this should be documented by local media houses. Having suffered for a whole month how can this be avoided**** in future maybe they should have a standby " whole system repair plus the cable :)" in Mombasa...... am sure Kenya Navy would provide a docking space ... :) On 23 March 2012 16:20, Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote:

@James, come on now, you know our local media houses have more important things to cover than sending some reporter and camera on some ship... like covering what politician A said in response to rumour 1, and how politician B responded to A, possibly by "...its a political conspiracy" etc etc etc However, I think one Larry Madowo would be in a better position to cover a cable repair, given his appetite for tech matters on his daily lunchtime show...

@kanyuru It's time we started producing more useful local content. Technical documentaries are one way (among many) to up this ante. I believe there is a colossal count of East Africans who would be entertained by documentaries that show:- 1. how our regional I.T. infrastructure works, 2. how regional land marks were constructed (from design to opening) 3. etc etc etc. *Local media should do it like they do on the discovery channel!!*[?] (and NatGeo) Think of the impact it would have on the next generation. _______________________________________________ *Without requirements or design, programming is the art of adding bugs to an empty text file.* _______________________________________________ * * 2012/3/23 Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com>

TEAMS CABLE CUT REPAIRS COMPLETED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Monday, 26 March 2012 09:05 26th March 2012….Repair works on the TEAMS (The East African Marine Systems) Cable that was damaged on 25th February 2012 have been successfully completed. This cut which occurred at the Kenyan coast damaged a crucial link for the bulk of internet and international voice traffic in the region. The repair works were successfully completed at 2:55 am 24th March 2012 ahead of the planned repair time of midnight 25th March 2012. Commenting on the repairs work, TEAMS’ General Manager Joel Tanui said, “Due to several undersea cable cuts around the same period (EASSY, EIG, SMW3, TEAMS) , the submarine cable maintenance company had a lot of challenges coping with the unusual workload. We were lucky to be allocated a cable ship that was just completing routine service at dry docks, Dubai. The repair cable ship arrived at Mombasa at midnight 20th March 2012 and immediately started the work the following day. A landmark public-private partnership, TEAMS is the premier undersea cable system serving the entire East African region. Besides the Government of Kenya, the other shareholders in the TEAMS consortium include Safaricom, Jamii Telecom, Wananchi, Essar, Kenya Data Networks, Access Kenya, Telkom Orange and Bandwidth & Cloud Services. Mr. Tanui further said, “We are deeply grateful for the patience that our TEAMS consortium members and all our customers showed during this time.” It is estimated that the repairs of the cable, including costs for temporary traffic restoration via other cables during the TEAMS cable outage is about Usd 6 Million(Kshs 500 Million), excluding loss of business as a result of heavily constrained bandwidth On Mar 23, 2012 8:13 PM, "Job Muriuki" <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote:
