Before you get to the commissions part,I suggest you look at the Oracle model which I totally love. You buy a 'Right to Use' software license and Support for one year. Come the following year you have to renew the license and support. Of course the implication in this case is that you may sell it for less but you are guaranteed an annuity every year. With this in mind you can then offer your sales team both a sign-on commission and a residual commission based on renewal because they are account managers as well - Relationship sales.
