Be wary of this laptop thief. He came to our office posing as a customer in the evening at around 6 when everyone was either out or leaving and the security was lax. He proceeded to steal 2 laptops mine included. I hear that they operate as a cartel and frequent offices that are outside the CBD in the evenings when people are leaving the office coz that's when they cant be easily noticed or questioned. All in all I managed to track and recover my laptop but the guy is still at large. Here is the link<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZCxLyKeXFE&feature=youtu.be> to the cctv footage -- Regards, C . K

Thanks for the info, There are also quite a bunch of these guys, esp in the evenings mostly hanging around Archives-Ambassador hotel area. You will be a target if you have a backpack bag with you. They will approach you in the naming of of "a kind request for 50 bob ya supper" and within a fraction of a minute, you are surrounded by a group of 5-10 guys. Before you know it you will have your laptop bag and pockets "perembwad" properly. Be warned peeps.. On Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 11:22 AM, charles kungu <charles.kungu@gmail.com>wrote:

Thanks Charles, I'm interested in the 'juicy' tech bit about tracking & recovery. Care to share? Tony.

Thanks for the alert... Also curious on the tracking.... On Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 11:56 AM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

I did not use any technology to track it back. Just gave my serial number & description to a friend in town and it was tracked to a certain pawn broker/shylock . I paid a certain amount and I got it back with everything intact. I had gone to the police and done a statement and all that but i knew it was waste of time since they told me to wait & give them time to investigate after viewing the footage closely. I did not have the time for being taken up and down by police so i engaged this streetwise friend who asked for the serial number and description of the laptop. He in turn apparently shared this with some guys in town and for sure within 2 hrs he called me to ask me the username of the main account on the laptop. I gave him the username and to my amazement it matched and i had the laptop intact within the next 1 hr. It turns out that there are 4 main guys in town who handle stolen gadgets i.e laptops, pads & smartphones under the protection of some senior cops. & therefore I did not involve the police again and I don't plan to because i knew if I involved them i would not have gotten the laptop. There are some tracking softwares by mobile service providers if one used their services and the guy are damn slow, plus bribing cops its becomes cheaper to buy another. I the market l had there is a software for tracking phones and laptops who can give me a hint on that am interested. James. On 2/13/14, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

Engaging the cops in such matters sometimes seems useless. I had lost my laptop last year July and reported the matter to the cops. I was referred to some CID guys and to my surprise, the CID actually gets his phone, calls a number and tells the person on the other end, “Hiyo HP mmetoka kuchukua saa hii msipeleke mahali. Ni ya mkubwa.” To my amazement, I was called by some guy who told me we meet I get my laptop back since he had been given my number by the cops to make sure I get my laptop back. The consequence of not giving it back was going to be the “disappearance” of some of his crew members. I got mine back because I directly went to a senior officer, otherwise I don’t think I would have seen it again. The likelihood of getting your gadget back based on some software is highly unlikely. I have been tracking my stolen smartphone for the past 5 months online. I havent bothered to go to the cops since it is in Tanzania and the bagga keeps changing sims. Seeing as how Tanzanians and kenyans treat each other suspiciously, the official route will just take me in circles. The odds worsen if its a laptop since it has to connect to the internet for it to call home. I have installed PREY before on my laptops but I doubt it would survive formatting the HDD. If Laptop Manufacturers incorporated tracking at the BIOS level then maybe this could be done. Maybe keep a log of GPS locations and WIFI connections to pinpoint location? Send screenshots and online activity maybe? On Thu, Feb 20, 2014 at 4:52 PM, <aouma@ymail.com> wrote:

For those with rooted phones, Avast mobile security comes highly recommended for tracking. (Full features are only accessible when the phone is rooted) Tony.

To discourage the vice, the Skunks going to buy gadgets in Maduka and other con dealers in Moi Avenue, Luthuli, Tom Mboya and Mfangano should stop. Its serious if the well informed guys engaging in crimes and treating each other with suspicion. James. On 2/13/14, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:

I would highly discourage people to avoid buying gadgets along moi avenue, Trust Building and its environs to be exact. There is a bad cartel that operates in that area. On Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 7:43 PM, James Mutuma <jmkmutuma@gmail.com> wrote:
