Nope, TouchWiz is going nowhere, but as they did with the Galaxy S4, I expect a GPE to sell in the course of the year. But why the branding, have Google terms changed? But the Pure Android devices are never available in Africa. Looks like the Google-Samsung terms were to ensure that Samsung does not keep the Google branding and services in the back. Samsung for the longest time has put prominence in their services and the average user sees very little of Google in Galaxy devices. This has gone on to make the Galaxy brand bigger than Android among Samsung devices. What can be interesting even is the part where Google announced Samsung as one of the partners in smart watches, this comes just three weeks after Samsung announced Tizen running smart watches. Samsung will really have to fight for this one because the Moto 360 is such a beauty. It features no ports. Its round, maintaining that authentic watch look. It has all this Moto features that really blow us away. Like the long battery life on the Moto G and the Active Display on the Moto X. Am not sure if there are any Moto retailers in Kenya because in my opinion its the only issue that would set me back in purchasing it other than the Samsung Galaxy Gear yet to be released. Moto are really hacking this Android thingy. Regards, Fernandes Muruthi. On Mar 23, 2014 6:25 PM, "Martin Gicheru" <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

Fernandez, I was talking of the whole blend. Ofcourse Samsung will have to go back to the drawing board now that Google has a dedicated wearables Android version, but distribution and marketing will be a huge determinant as to who ends up with the numbers. As for user experience, Nexus is quite good for the geek, can't say that the average user goes for Nexus that much compared to the Sonys and Samsungs of the mobile world.

I agree with you Martin. Samsung are really dominant in our market. I like Samsung products (not love) and they will trump over this market because they can play the dominance card. But they should be wary the others are catching up. Regards, Fernandes Muruthi. On Mar 24, 2014 9:00 PM, "Martin Gicheru" <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

Is there much difference between a Nexus and a Samsung to most users, other than a weird user interface on one? The Z2 and Galaxy S5 are pretty similar. Would go for the Z2, but you'd rather wait until a month after both devices are available to read up on the experience. Sometimes manufacturers screw up on the software and there are issues. -- with Regards: blog.denniskioko.com <http://www.denniskioko.com/>

Dennis that weird user interface is what makes it easy for users to do things that matter to them, like finding widgets, touch and hold controls on the notifications area. We had this conversation offline with Waciira also on this list. Nexus is a clean UI but TouchWiz makes doing things easier for the average user. Just like the familiar experience by Nokia in the days of Symbian. I will contribute onto the Xperia Z2 versus Galaxy S5 later when others give their input. I had a short time with Xperia Z2 in Barcelona as they launched it same time with Nokia X and I had interviews to do. Galaxy S5 on the other hand, I've been with it a few days now and I know quite a lot about it. Regards, Martin Gicheru Editor Techweez On 24 Mar 2014 21:20, "Dennis Kioko" <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

@Martin a disclosure of interest would be good right about now. I dislike the Touchwiz interface and all its versions. It actually makes it harder to do things for me since I have to learn afresh a new interface and way of doing things. It also feels rather dumbed down in my opinion. For regular users I suppose this is a good thing but for me this is too iPhone like in terms of anyone can use it. Not that the Vanilla android is difficult to use. Mark, there you said it, "dumbed down". That's what appeals to the average user who is not a techie like you. You the guy who will be okay with Intense debate and Disqus because you know quite a lot, versus the guy who will prefer the Wordpress comment system. That's the best way to compare these. You are Nexus material, no doubt. I use other smartphones too and earlier today just compared the accuweather app on TouchWiz versus what you will find off the Play store, the former has better functionality. Went ahead to compare the steps required to change Bluetooth settings on TouchWiz (2 steps) versus Vanilla Android (4 steps), there is a huge difference. The average user isn't in it to learn how to use the smartphone but to actually enjoy it soonest possible. Let me remind you, "anyone can use it" is what sells. @martin All well and good for sales but I cannot help but notice a rather heavy leaning towards Samsung in all your analysis. Being affiliated to the company is fine but at least admit to it. Selling a PR piece as objective reporting is deceptive. On Tue, Mar 25, 2014 at 2:21 PM, Martin Gicheru <martin@techweez.com> wrote:

You are Nexus material, no doubt.
I use other smartphones too and earlier today just compared the accuweather app on TouchWiz versus what you will find off the Play store, the former has better functionality. Went ahead to compare the steps required to change Bluetooth settings on TouchWiz (2 steps) versus Vanilla Android (4 steps), there is a huge difference. The average user isn't in it to learn how to use the smartphone but to actually enjoy it soonest possible.
Let me remind you, "anyone can use it" is what sells.

The Z2 and Galaxy S5 are pretty similar. Would go for the Z2, but you'd rather wait until a month after both devices are available to read up on the experience. Sometimes manufacturers screw up on the software and there are issues.
