DSTV signal distribution

What device is used to distribute the DSTV signal in such a way that there's only one *decoder* but each viewer can watch *different channels* from what others are watching? @John, The output from the decoder is a single viewable channel as each CAM module is married to a single smart card. If you are designing a system for eg a hotel, then multiple decoders are necessary. Each decoder is then fed to a RF amp and channelised to a distribution frequency, thus the coax cable will bring in multiple channels on that single cable. HTHs. @John, Let me indulge in some details so you may decide what is going on. My opinion, could be sci-fi .... :-) DTSV is based on the Irdeto encrytion system. This is the heart and soul and worth probably billions now. DSTV's bread/butter is based on the security of its encryption system. During the analogue days, Irdeto made chipsets that were embedded into the decoders. On Digital Sat, they started of with some receiver models that were not too difficult to crack, for a short period. These had removable CAM modules, where the smart card queried info. Some people even went to the extent of getting sim cards from other countries where the subs were cheaper due to lesser channels. In other parts of Europe, some guys wrote SIM card duplication programs while others deviced the famous smart card cloning tools. So you could clone a smart card and pay a single account but use multiple decoders. Now a company that has invested millions in its infrastructure, made long term commitments with channels is not going to let up on its investments or its core, especially when people can find newer ways to open its system. So came the next step to plugging the hacks and also add newer software/channels. Marry the Smart Card and Decoder. This way, even if you insert the smart card into another decoder it will not work. Then there are OTA firmware security checks that are done regularly, probably over a 60 second period where the code changes. So in a very rare event can you open the system, it maybe effective for only 60 seconds. I'm sure they must have brought down this time check to a few seconds. Once would need to be a low level genius, have all the hack tools and you maybe lucky to get the service for a few seconds only. DSTV's existence is because of the encryption system, not its satellite coverage or otherwise so it would protect this very very strongly. Could it be recorded programs below? I understand that Asia was removed from it's coverage coz of such hacks. Encryption is conc but still, that guy has it n he charges 500 per month per 'subscriber'! I'm hoping he's not the only guy who can do that coz i'm puzzled. On 3/17/10, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@John, I'm going to try and limit my comments as it maybe becoming spammy to others. :-) Firstly, as per your description and charges, it seems that the guy is no hardware hacker nor low level programming specialist because it would take ages to master any encryption system especially based on a chipset. Can you imagine prodding a processor bus timing bursts? With what? Who has such equipment here? The workings of such an encryption systems are not public knowledge so you have to sketch out your analysis and understand the buses/timings. You have to be very very very good, maybe too good in your skillset. Just a simple question : Do you know who uses 20-50Ghz Oscilloscopes in KE? Even if you take the code approach, you still to be very good with PIDS to request data and have chipset info to do this. To me, seems he is an RF guy who knows how DSTV operates in many areas such as commercial ones. The only explanation I can think of is that he may have inherited some equipment from a hotel/apartment and thus the whole thing could be a pretty twisted affair due to smart card account info manipulation. I'd stay away from such. Me amatuer thots, Rgds. On Wed, Mar 17, 2010 at 8:08 PM, John Macharia <kihahu@gmail.com> wrote:

Maybe he talked to guys in Asia b4 they were disconnected n he inherited the info. Whatever it is he's using, I'll need to know. But i'm sure he's not into anything deep. I once saw this at some hotel. I'm sure it must have been an illegal one... The guy had this strange decoder, with a strange unfamiliar menu. But it was running DSTV. The decoder was called Astrovox/ Astrobox or something of the sort. How does that work? I mean, if he was paying the full amount for DSTV, he would get a proper decoder, right? Must have been some Asian thing! On Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 5:55 PM, George Njoroge <themburu@gmail.com> wrote:

Firstly, as per your description and charges, it seems that the guy is no hardware hacker nor low level programming specialist because it would take ages to master any encryption system especially based on a chipset.
Me amatuer thots,
Rgds.

Don't have all the details but one of them told me that he uses multiple decoders to receive and then retransmits. Like has one dish which he splits to connect many decoders then each decoder receives one channel e.g Africa Magic, another one Africa Magic PLUS and another one Supersport 1 etc. Then he uses a device which combines all of them and retransmits them through a cable. If you look at the estates which have these services you will see many cables hoping from one building to another and of course when the signals become weak they use repeaters to boost it. regards, James Edwin Kaduki wrote:
I once saw this at some hotel. I'm sure it must have been an illegal one... The guy had this strange decoder, with a strange unfamiliar menu. But it was running DSTV. The decoder was called Astrovox/ Astrobox or something of the sort. How does that work? I mean, if he was paying the full amount for DSTV, he would get a proper decoder, right? What were your findings in this topic ?? I also tried to investigate the same thing -and the obvious conclusion was what I saw in a hotel in DR Congo [I asked the night manager to take me down to the store room where they had the decoders..] They had multiple DSTV decoders,, which they fed to a Multiplexer-Demultiplexer device - The MUX ran the same number of cables as the DSTV decoders,, and the DEMUX went to the various rooms... Then the cables would just work as normal TV, such that when the coax went into the TV, one had to tune and store each DSTV channel into the regular unused TV channels on U-UHF. This is simple and stress free... and if one gets the minimum bouquet at around Ksh. 4500, for 10 channels = 45000/- . Then if one is to sell to clients at 1000 pm then one needs more than 45 clients etc etc..

You are right. Went to one of the major hotels and witnessed the same thing. On 5/10/10, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:
