Simple Linux Box for sharing Net Connect

Greetings Skunks, Got a query regarding this. Since there are great minds amongst us, was wondering if i could pick one for this: *Hi, * ** *I've got a CDMA Connection using a 3G+ Modem from Orange, i've had good speeds with it but need to know if i can share this connection.* *I've been reading up on using a Server but Linux technologies seemed quite extensive for me. Mac was an option till i saw the price. And * *well, there's windows..* ** *Back to the actual problem, i wanted to know if i can use a simple Linux Operating System to share my connection. * ** *I have a good PC with two internet ethernet connection cards and i'd like to share from the Modem. What Linux operating system can i use that will be * ** *1. Easy to install* *2. Easy to administer* *3. Can be good looking :D* *4. Most important, works with Orange modems. * ** *Thanking you for your assistance in this matter.* ** Any help will come in handy. I was going to suggest Ubuntu but i've had a few thoughts behind asking on-list about what distro would work best with this kind of setup. Spoke to him, he's not that tech savvy but can navigate around a computer, dislikes windows for the issues it has .. he's using XP. WATCHMAN. -- ...and I shall shed my light over dark evil. Ubuntu (10.10) doesn't seem to work so well with Orange modem (ZTE). Perhaps yours is Huawei?? That might work better but I am not sure. Perhaps some other skunker will have better advise for you and me. Ubuntu still remains your best bet though, but take that with a pinch of salt as I am not an expert with Linux. You can share Internet using Windows, but disable automatic updates. It's pretty straightforward using Windows. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Hey, Had a pal who was working on setting up something similar.... though instead of getting ent through a modem, he was getting it through an ethernet cable... apparently, you can use any linux distro. in fact, he was using one that would fit in a diskette on a pentium 2... here's one of the resources he used. hope it helps.. http://lindesk.com/2007/04/internet-connection-sharing-using-iptables/ http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/linux-share-internet.asp http://www.howtoforge.com/internet-connection-sharing-masquerading-on-linux On 10/16/10, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

well , your best bet would be Ubuntu or Fedora or related distros, those two tend to be on the cutting edge of technology and support

Ubuntu and opensuse has great driver support, so any of those two would probably give you a /dev/ttyUSB0 handle on the modem. Then: Set up wvdial. Create the necessary iptbales rules. Set up squid. Then you can set it up to be shared via wireless or Ethernet. I can set this up for you. Email me privately.

I think it's better if you post instructions here. It will benefit many. We will write him Ubuntu 10.10 installation media:-) I am only asking this way to know how you'd do it in his preferred way - with Orange modem. My ZTE modem is giving me grief on Ubuntu, to an extent I am goingto buy a Huawei one tomorrow, unless you intervene and say there is an easier way to get the ZTE working on Ubuntu. I am using mine on a laptop - Lenovo T61 to be precise. The Safaricom Huawei works without a glitch. my conclusion on this (and i set a similar thing last week, im sure wash will attest to the many questions i asked and he graciously assisted). your best bet is to differentiate the orange device from the linux gateway. -> look for a CDMA router. which means you get a device that on its own negotiates the connectin and gives you net to an ethernet port. you can then use an old PC to share the connection. if however all you need is sharing and not necessarily administration, i recommend getting a router and connecting it to a switch. youll be home and dry. A CDMS router is good enough for what he wants to do. So no need for another Linus box, unless he wants to run a mail server/http proxy on the LAN. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

The modem that has always worked for me with this setup is the Huawei E160. I set it up on Linux because it gives me fine grained config control at every stage, but if all you need is to plug in the modem and have it shared as quickly as possible, the FreeBSD based router distro pfSense is what you're looking for. Here are the steps: Get one of these modems http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Known_Working_3G_Modems (i bet the 160 would work with it too). Being that it says "probably many others" try your ZTE modem too. Get a wireless card for your gateway box. Install PF sense according to the docs http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/InstallationGuide and bam! you have a wireless access point sharing your net. Installing Squid as a transparent proxy is really crucial in my opinion as it cache's static content, freeing up bandwidth that would otherwise be used getting the same static content (works especially well for social networking sites) Make these changes http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,8620.msg59306.html#msg59306 to get squid to work properly.

i second timothy. I have set up pfsense and works flawlessly, yet im running the beta. Tons of bugs on voucher generation but getting there. On Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 12:56 PM, Timothy Makobu < makobu.mwambiriro@gmail.com> wrote:

I just read that I can get pfsense to run on a router board - Alix boards<http://www.pcengines.ch/alix.htm>. Has anyone tried?

Those specs look sufficient for routing, but i wouldn't put squid on that.

Sure. I would be out of my mind to install squid on to it. I could just shape traffic and other light operations on it.

I assume the original poster needed a _simple_ solution on a linux box he could also use as a `desktop` .. running a bash script with the following iptable rules will surely sort him out : === #!/bin/bash iptables --flush iptables --table nat --flush iptables --delete-chain iptables --table nat --delete-chain # Set up IP FORWARDing and Masquerading iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ppp0 -j MASQUERADE iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward ==== On 18/10/2010, Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote:

and also iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT so it will allow forwarding ACKs and the rest of the TCP 'conversation' in ppp0 out eth0
