Mobile Battery Charge Issues

Hey Yall, I got a Nokia 3110c, and the charge lasts for 2 days. The shop that sold to me says the Mobile Network is consuming the battery charge. I didn't believe them (fully) so I went to Nokia Care at Hilton. Nokia told me that it's normal for that to happen. However I had a motorolla which would last for 4 days. So I'm puzzled here. Are the mobile networks being blamed for a poorly made device (battery) or is this a true experience for most people on ALL phones. The phone is on Safaricom. I would like to know (especially if you work in CBD) how long your battery lasts before you have to charge it. I hope this info will give us a better understanding when buying a phone. Having to charge every 2 days is un-acceptable. Kwani I'm feeding a baby!? 8~!

Please Note that Bluetooth is turned off, I'm not connecting to any machine, not listening to Music etc. It's only calling and SMS. On average I'm talking for about 5 minutes a day. --- On Thu, 12/17/09, wesley kirinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> wrote: From: wesley kirinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> Subject: [Skunkworks] Mobile Battery Charge Issues To: "Skunk Works" <skunkworks@my.co.ke> Date: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 9:27 AM Hey Yall, I got a Nokia 3110c, and the charge lasts for 2 days. Wes, The network claim might be true. When I'm in Kenya my Nokia batts last max 2 days. When I'm in SA or Cairo or Botswana with same phone I get up to 4 days with heavily increased usage as I use the phone for most of my 'net access. Hey Yall,
I got a Nokia 3110c, and the charge lasts for 2 days. The shop that
sold
to me says the Mobile Network is consuming the battery charge.

Ngure has hit the nail on the head. A high density network - consisting of cells, micro-cells and boosters - minimises the internal radio's power utilisation - thereby allowing battery more of a lifetime before next charge. I'm not trying to bash Safaricom - just observing a fact. I have had this issue with Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple iPhone, Blackberry and Palm smartphones - and it is always consistent. In fact my batteries last longer even in Dar es salaam and Kampala. Might it also have something to do with the fact that our subscriber numbers are higher here and the number of subscribers/base station might impose such a load that individual handsets need to consume more power to stay in sync with the base station? While that may be true - then it becomes an engineering challenge - that can be solved by using the South African approach of putting in a very high-density of base-stations, micro-cells and boosters. In SA - the network allows you to see what cell you are connected to on your phones screen. it is not uncommon to see the phone change to a different cell - within 5 footsteps in a mall and within less than 500 metres while on the road. I want to believe there is something with Safaricom network. I have two phones, a Nokia (used on Zain) and an Ericsson (used on Safaricom). The Ericsson needs to be recharged everyday, even though I don't use it as much as the Nokia. The same thing happens when I connect the Nokia to Safaricom -- I have to charge it everyday as battery level drops so fast, even minus any significant usage. On Zain, the phones can last 3-4 days without requiring to be recharged. Did anyone realize that there are so many times the network signal on the phone goes off on phones connected to Safaricom? I think there are several mild occurrences of such, leading to battery drain, the same way a battery drains fast when you are in an area where there is no network coverage. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

It follows that the poorer the signal strength, the more power your phone will expend trying to connect to the network. .So to answer your question, true, your battery will die faster on Safaricom, followed by Yu,then Orange and it will stay longer on Zain.Actually for Kenya, whatever standby and talk time hrs defined by the phone manufacturer, reduce that by 40%. Though your phone is not 3G enabled, do note that 3G will also require more power than GSM coz of the use of WCDMA. 2009/12/17 Brian Munyao Longwe <blongwe@gmail.com>

The safaricom network has been very erratic over the last few weeks I can say the least. at any one location there has been more signal flactuation than usual. this am sure directly affects your mobiles power usage, even at standby as it tries to negotiate for a higher signal strength. this has the effect of reducing the battery standby time.

Call it bashing if you want, but I complained about this in June this year. At certain locations, Safaricom signal behaves as if "it comes by wind" one minute the signal strength bar is full, the next minute nothing, no network. A case of simply pure poor network engineering. Problem is - missed calls = lost revenue, but hey they make enough (no too much) already...

Hi; Jared Koyier explained it all. Actually when a mobile handset is in idle state (Powered and not being used) its is always doing 2 things, 1. Its keeps doing what is called Location Update. This means that if you are driving and your fone on the dash board and your car radio ON sometimes you will hear your car radio being interrupted like there is an incoming call. Actually the phone is doing Location update that the Network can tell your new location as you move. This consumes power. 2. The fone will always try to have the maximum signal all the time. This means if the network coverage (Density) is bad your battery will be consumed faster. It uses power to do this. If you are near a BTS the phone uses less power. Note that BTS power is emitted radially so the closer you are to BTS the better as there is less attenuation. This can be proved mathematically also. If you move to a place without network at all and keep your phone on you will notice that the battery is consumed faster. In the long run this will also destroy the batter Regards On Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 10:28 AM, simiyu mse <kensimiyu@gmail.com> wrote:
The safaricom network has been very erratic over the last few weeks I can say the least. at any one location there has been more signal flactuation than usual. this am sure directly affects your mobiles power usage, even at standby as it tries to negotiate for a higher signal strength. this has the effect of reducing the battery standby time. _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Server donations spreadsheet

But does it really explain the initial problem presented by this thread i.e. same network different phone('s batteries)? On Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 8:37 AM, Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> wrote:

Exactly, back to the root! Thanks Joram and all the guys (and gals ofcourse) for the lovely insight. Brian said that he has the same issues with Sony Ericsson, iPhone, ... May be the issue is worse with higher end mobile devices? Now this issue has brought up another issue. Since poor/congested network planning by mobile operators can lead to poor mobile battery life, are there countries that have regulations in place for mobile network planning? There was a report some time back that measured our mobile telcos. Did that report measure this network planning/battery drainage issue for the various telcos? o_O? --- On Fri, 12/18/09, Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com> wrote: From: Gakuru Alex <alexgakuru.lists@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Mobile Battery Charge Issues To: "Skunkworks Forum" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Date: Friday, December 18, 2009, 8:04 AM But does it really explain the initial problem presented by this thread i.e. same network different phone('s batteries)?
