On Access Layer of a network, considering that network architecture has The Core, The Distribution and The Acess layers then an IP DSLAM would come inhandy in providing ADSL, ADLS2+ and many other triple play services to residential subcribers My 5 cents!

Use a DSLAM if you intend to run an ADSL infrastructure. Depending on the scale of the service you are intending to roll out. DSL offers your service on a pair of copper cable. I also believe it can be installed as last mile connecting to wireless connection/Fiber connecting to a DSLAM box. Ave also seen excellent Ericsson DSLAM gear, which have cabinet built-in with cron units, xdsl ports and power in a compact enclosure.
