Low cost :) might be tricky. DSLR's in the kenyan market are not exactly cheap. I know of someone disposing of a Canon though. -- Josiah Mugambi Samuel Goldwyn<http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/s/samuel_goldwyn.html> - "I don't think anyone should write their autobiography until after they're dead." what's your budget brother? i've got a DSLR, it's a semi pro and voted best entry level semi pro camera of 2007, it's an Olympus E520 and i've got a number of lenses that go with it as well as a speedlite flash that works with it. I've used it for 2 years and it's served me well. Taken approx. 10,000 images with it. It's got a shutter life of 100,000 so there's a long way to go, I moved to the Pro series Camera's about 6 months ago and don't need the Olympus anymore. Let me know what your budget is and we can work with it if you like. Here's some info about it. * http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1386 *With regards to your question on best model, i would have to say it's a matter of preference. There are religions in Cameras as there are on Machines. Take a look at it, i still use the Olympus from time to time as a spare rib when i'm on shoots, it's a great camera. Call me if you want more info or just want to talk Cameras. :D Rahim. 0734 334 074. * *Josiah Mugambi wrote:

Lenses matter but depends on what you're doing. Let's look into this matter a bit in depth. Are you : 1. Looking to Photograph People 2. Looking to Photograph Wildlife 3. Looking to Photograph Products 4. Looking to Photograph Insects 5. Looking to Photograph Landscapes and Architecture These are the categories i would classify photography into when it comes to DSLR's. If you're not looking at this as a whole and simply want a camera that works when you want it to and is a digital, you should look into the A - Series cameras with Canon or the Sony Cyber Shot Series. Like Brainiac said, Zeiss manufactures lenses for cameras ( i.e. the actual bifocal that sits in a lens of a camera ). In Sony's case however, i believe they manufacture the entire Lens with the Casing, etc. You can not go wrong with a Zeiss manufactured device. I don't want to put you down brother but frankly, to get a DSLR @ 15 - 20K means one of a few things. It could be in a bad state, is malfunctioning, old and not useworthy, is only the body, is *stolen*. The reason i have to say this is that DSLR's are expensive cameras. Bodies can cost up to 3000$, sometimes even more. I am not simply saying this, i have been practicing photography seriously for the past 7 years and my initial investment after taking 2 loans was USD $700. This was about 5 years ago when i moved from a Canon Powershot A-620 to a Canon EOS 400D. So let's take a look at which avenue you want to take with the photography and then can help further. In the meanwhile, i'll keep my eyes peeled for any cam's that come my way. If there's something that's in your bracket, i'll Holla! Rahim. [ Brainiac ] wrote:

Personally I'd avoid cameras that use smaller CCDs as with jpeg rendering engines, have become too useless. If you want to know about image quality, shoot at around 400iso and some shadows and you may discover that most of easy to carry cameras belong in the bin. On lens for DSLR, there is no alternative to good quality optics and glass but costs are crazy. I bought a re-furbished 17-35mm 2.8D lens a few years ago at a hefty price but have not regretted that purchase. You can come close to WYSIWYG on images on tones, shadows and highlights. As a tip on digital photography, use the camera histogram ( some do 2 levels while others do complete RGB ) to under/over expose compensation to create image. With experience, you will spend less time editing and more time taking images. If you are doing studio work, get a 50 mm 1.4D lens ( not cheap ) and give you clients the best exposures/tones/detail and clarity. BTW, my opinion, I'm pretty pissed off at the Canon G10 ( all are useless toys ! ) and reverted back to DSLR. I've seen the quality of the 35mm DSLR and its impressive. Anyone used it?

Hey guys, I also happen to be a photography fan, but I am yet to buy my first camera.. as in a real camera for pro photography, as opposed to the one on my phone :D Anyway, I hope I don't get kicked out of the list for asking this question: do you need a special lens to take a pic like this<http://is.gd/64Jc9>or what magic was used to take it?? I haven't really diverted the course of this conversation, or have I? Me :) 2010/1/11 aki <aki275@googlemail.com>

@Simon for you to take such a picture (was it taken in Afghanistan or Iraq?) you need a special kind of lens to capture the objects clearly. If you take a look at the background, the objects are in motion. With your normal phone camera, you can't take such kind of a picture with precision because this means you must shoot ahead of the object in order to get the full view of them (objects) Have you ever wondered how photographers take pictures of footballers? There are various way to make the best out of the shooting. One of which is to have a camera that allows you to make many shots continuously without the need to wind the shutter.
I haven't really diverted the course of this conversation, or have I?

Hey guys,
I also happen to be a photography fan, but I am yet to buy my first camera.. as in a real camera for pro photography, as opposed to the one on my phone :D Anyway, I hope I don't get kicked out of the list for asking this question: do you need a special lens to take a pic like this<http://is.gd/64Jc9>or what magic was used to take it??

Hey guys,
I also happen to be a photography fan, but I am yet to buy my first camera.. as in a real camera for pro photography, as opposed to the one on my phone :D Anyway, I hope I don't get kicked out of the list for asking this question: do you need a special lens to take a pic like this<http://is.gd/64Jc9>or what magic was used to take it??

@Simon, that bike image can be done using an SLR and on a slower shutter speed. Ok, here's another tip that works for me. If you like doing people pics, then remember that each face has a photogenic side to it. Take 6 evaluative images of a face and shoulders and look at the detail. You will be amazed at what angle the images need to be taken on. Attached is a low res image sequence I did a few years ago of the lunar eclipse....... :-) -- "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

You definitely need a (D)SLR for this one. You need to be able to control: - aperture settings (affects depth of field for that blurry foreground/background effect) - shutter speed (to capture motion blur or to freeze an image in time) - since this image was shot in ample light then ISO settings aren't too much of an issue (though avoid higher settings else you'll get grainier images) My guesses on the image: - it was shot with a large aperture setting (hence the fore- and background are blurry while the subject is in focus) - shutter speed wasn't too fast (in order to capture motion blur) Most DSLRs have an aperture-priority shooting mode, that will fairly easily give you such effects, even if you aren't a pro. This link has explanations on the "exposure triangle" (ISO, Shutter speed, Aperture) http://digital-photography-school.com/aperture-and-shutter-priority-modes Most of all, have fun with your photos (and the process of taking them), regardless of the equipment you have. You can still get great shots with a point-and-shoot if you take time to learn a little and explore a lot. Saidi On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 11:56 AM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

I'm not certain this technique will work: panning with slow shutter speed will leave "motion trails" on the subject (in addition to the fore- and background). In the Afghan-motorcycle image, the subject is perfectly sharp/frozen while the fore- and backgrounds are blurred. I'm not sure you can achieve that without fiddling with aperture settings, in addition to shutter-speed settings. Only (D)SLRs are capable of this, as far as I can tell. Note that by "slow shutter speed" .. we mean relative to the moving object. For still objects slow shutter speeds are usually anything 1/30 or lower where you typically need a tripod. In panning since you are rapidly moving the camera while taking the picture you set a shutter speed relative to the moving object. For trains and aircraft i use shutter speeds of upto 1/400 / 1/500 which is a fast shutter speed for still objects but slow when compared to a fast moving object. Aperture doesnt really matter here ... you dont have to shoot wide open at the largest aperture. You would use large apertures and slow shutter speeds (1/30 - 1/100) to get the background out of focus for still objects / portraits. In this case the background gets blurred because you are moving the camera while taking the picture ... and the background does not move .... only the subject matter is in motion.

Guys how about posting a few samples that you have done ... for us Novices ... Am soo throwing out my 25K Sony that I bought at Ebrahims ... 2010/1/12 <ashok+skunkworks@parliaments.info<ashok%2Bskunkworks@parliaments.info>

@Simon, I'm definitely not a photography guru, but I think it's pretty simple: whoever took the shot seems to have been moving at roughly the same speed as the motorcycle. Everything else that stands still blurs out - this you can easily achieve by fiddling with the exposure timings. With a shorter exposure time, the background should also have come into sharp focus. I stand corrected though! Just my 2 cents :) Haggai Nyang On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 7:56 PM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:

@Haggai; What you are suggeting could be true and this is covered more under Sampling Theory , in particular Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem. Why in the old movies the cart's wheel seem to rotate in the opp direction etc - a function of continuous time or space. Check about the sampling rate. You can google and there is plenty to read. Simon, No special lens required, just a steady hand, and "Motion" preset on your camera. 1: Focus on object in motion (takes some getting used to since you have to sync camera motion with object motion). 2: Press shutter. Granted, it takes some practice, but you'll soon get it. Surprisingly, the faster the object, the better the effect. The bigger challenge is the physical handling of the camera, especially the point-and-shoot models. Larger DSLRs are better since it's easier to balance and keep the camera focused using 2 hands, as opposed to a small P&S designed for 1-handed grip (plenty of jitter). Personally, I find larger DSLRs handle better than the smaller P&Ss. YMMV. MB// On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 7:56 PM, Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>wrote:
