Airtel KE & Caller ID misnomer: BEWARE Hiding Caller ID will prevent you from making calls on Airtel Network!!
First of all, sorry for cross-posting. I have spend a better part of today on calls with Airtel Customer Care, an Airtel Techie and an Airtel Customer Care Team Leader trying to figure out why a colleague could not make calls from his line. If he dialled any number, it would not go, with 'Check Operator Services' being displayed on the screen. More than 10 calls to Airtel and all I was being told is 'do a lock-up', 'we've refreshed the line', 'do a lock-up' and all this didn't solve Finally at 1620hrs, I call the number for Customer Care Team Leader and he asks me to check the SenderID setting under 'Call Settings' on the phone. I find that 'Send Caller ID' is set to disabled. He tells me to enable it and then try calling and voila! I am able to call. So I ask him why so and he tells me that on Airtel's network, if you hide Caller ID, you will NOT be able to make calls. I tested that option on my own phone and for sure I am not able to call, but at least it tells me 'Check Caller ID sending'... I tested that option on another phone with Safaricom SIM Card and I was able to make calls to Airtel, Safaricom, Landline... Bernard, If that option was such a nuisance, then I suppose the phone makers should be the ones to help sort out this problem. Yes, it could be a nuisance, but I am of the opinion that it's there for a reason and if someone (callee) doesn't like it, they can always decline the phone, or even better still, modern phone apps can help them block those. I don't think there's a bigger justification than that just the same way someone turning up at your doorstep in a hooded mask knocking is a nuisance. What possible reason could there be for hidden caller ID ? The only entity that is affected by the hidden caller ID is the recipient of the call. Otherwise this can be overridden by the operator as premium subscribers on Safaricom could tell you. Mark, I think the reasoning by some is that we have moved ahead technologically so hiding Caller ID should not even be discussed. However, I believe Airtel should tell all and sundry that the option is BANNED in their network and will prevent subscribers who activate it from making calls. I don't think it's right to silently activate it and hope everyone will know. I wonder who makes decisions at Airtel - ALL decisions. Finally at 1620hrs, I call the number for Customer Care Team Leader and he asks me to check the SenderID setting under 'Call Settings' on the phone. I find that 'Send Caller ID' is set to disabled. He tells me to enable it and then try calling and voila! I am able to call. So I ask him why so and he tells me that on Airtel's network, if you hide Caller ID, you will NOT be able to make calls.
I tested that option on my own phone and for sure I am not able to call, but at least it tells me 'Check Caller ID sending'... I tested that option on another phone with Safaricom SIM Card and I was able to make calls to Airtel, Safaricom, Landline...
Someone please tell me what this is supposed to achieve, besides the fact that I believe this setting should be set at the pleasure of the phone user.When did CCK introduce this legislation and why is Safaricom (and probably other MNOs) not adhering to it??
IIRC, nowhere in my contract with Airtel did they mention that it's their discretion to decide on this option.

lol @Wash I gave up on them when they were still Zain. Some decisions they made left me asking WTF?? and the explanations offered were even worse. I remember asking for a feature to be activated and the response was they would ask marketing if it was alright indicating that Marketing called the shots there. A similar request to Safaricom and they told me it was up to the Engineers. I guess that shows who is running the show there. Personally I will clap for airtel for such a move, why would you hide your ID when calling party X and on another intelligent question mentioned above why will device manufacture not allow party X block hidden calls. AFAIK & C, Airtel did it right to prevent people who hide their ID call. Such people are really a headache, if you ask me. However, the firm ought to tell her subscribers what made them go through that step. I think that's the best thing to do. And will that not be contested via Chukua Hatua?
