@Kevin, The balloons are in the Stratosphere - way above where the planes fly, if you watched the video. Did you mean if, for some reason, the aliens puncture a balloon? On 17 June 2013 16:20, Kevin Omondi <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> wrote:

Am curious what frequency will they run on which is not already in use to provide broadband. How big are this receivers to receive any meaningful signal at that height?

The good thing here is that there is no obstructions, terrain issues, and dead zones to deal with if you are broadcasting from the sky.. Even if you were broadcasting from a very tall tower the curvature of the earth would get in the way. hmmm..... cheap slow moving "satellites" that don't need expensive rocket launches and costly slower radiation hardened HW! WHAT IF:- 1. Someone published open-source blue prints for the HW & SW required to build one of these units? 2. What if the blue prints required only 100% off the shelf components? 3. Additionally, what if because of #1 & 2 above, OEMs come up with cheap/affordable complete units that anyone can buy and place in the sky? Is it possible that we can have a sort of a world wide community funded & supported high capacity network without recurring connectivity & usage costs? Would it be true to say that :- *Bitcoin is to Central Banks* as *"Community Loon" is to ISPs & TELCOs?* Interesting times ahead. _______________________________________________ *“Java is to JavaScript what Car is to Carpet.”* _______________________________________________ * * 2013/6/22 James Nzomo <kazikubwa@gmail.com>

I like this project, purely to the fact that it’s a game changer, and could totally disrupt the fixed wireless communications industry, as we know it. I think the next phase of this project would be to launch a long endurance, low altitude solar powered communication drone, like the one built by QinetiQ that flew for 14 days in 2010 that could be potentially used to give low cost, communications in disaster hit regions, and areas beyond the reach of mobile communication networks. The limitations of such a project would be endless. Did you mean if, for some reason, the aliens puncture a balloon?

My take is that this project belongs to the lab and might not get out of there. The TV whitespace project is already demonstrated and will kick off pretty fast. This is IMHO ./Ok3ch On Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 10:51 PM, Vincent Wayodi <wayodi@gmail.com> wrote:

I think this is a project that would benefit the pirates bay, though a bit modified, they have been having issues with copyright agencies in many lands, if they go up there nobody will get them, problem solved.Freedom for pirates. So, so soon, everyone becomes a loonie - courtesy of Google! :) Interesting project though. These guys are saying they can 'pilot' these loons from a loon control centre, and even get them to land somewhere?? Now I wonder what M$ things about this versus their Whitespace... Google becoming a global broadband ISP ... we need to allow them to use all our data for free, without questions.. On 17 June 2013 01:25, Vincent Wayodi <wayodi@gmail.com> wrote:
