hmmm..... cheap slow moving "satellites" that don't need expensive rocket launches and costly slower radiation hardened HW!

WHAT IF:-
  1. Someone published open-source blue prints for the HW & SW required to build one of these units?
  2. What if the blue prints required only 100% off the shelf components?
  3. Additionally, what if because of #1 & 2 above, OEMs come up with cheap/affordable complete units that anyone can buy and place in the sky?
Is it possible that we can have a sort of a world wide community funded & supported high capacity network without recurring connectivity & usage costs?

Would it be true to say that :-
Bitcoin is to Central Banks as "Community Loon" is to ISPs & TELCOs?

Interesting times ahead.

@Karunyu There is no international consensus but depending on how you view it, could be 100KM up (accepted edge of space), or as high as any country cares to police (as high as the weapon with the highest service ceiling within its arsenal)

@ job -> The balloons carry antenna with radio frequency technology, each antenna can provide a connection to ground area of 25 miles/37 km in diameter with speeds similar to 3G.

Interesting question ....

Sputnik put into practice the idea that airspace does not extend to 'space'.

However, the question is not about the location of the balloons themselves but rather the location of the radio waves coming from the balloons.

How far up does a country's airspace go?

There's a reason there doing Project Loon on an island ... and it's regulatory.

Could you imagine the huff if Kenya had Internet balloons in its airspace that were accessible from Uganda or Tanzania?

The good thing here is that there is no obstructions, terrain issues, and dead zones to deal with if you are broadcasting from the sky.. Even if you were broadcasting from a very tall tower the curvature of the earth would get in the way.

Am curious what frequency will they run on which is not already in use to provide

How big are this receivers to receive any meaningful signal at that height?
