What does online banking really stand for in Kenya? Does just having a website (online presence) really stand for online banking? Seriously... NIC Bank apparently offers online banking for its Move customers, but their "online banking" service has been down for abt 3 odd weeks. If any of you guys can implement a simple security module for passwords, you should probably approach them and help them out. Brian.

At least you managed to get in. I have been waiting for access to Standard Chartered's online banking for over a year since my first application. Each time they have no record that I applied. Tried again a week ago. Let's see what happens! -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

Online banking I think means being able to access and transact your account electronically through the internet. Having a website can not be said to be online banking. @Daudi, I am surprised to hear you are having issues with your Online application at Standard Chartered. i have come to find them to be among the most reliable banks around so that comes as a surprise. Nevertheless, their online banking system is world class, if you manage to get it. Maybe you should try and visit the branch and just demand to speak to a manager. Other banks have a long way to go. NIC and CBA have some sort of online banking but they are below standards as far as interface and functionality is concerned.

With my account it is not just online banking but mobile banking as well. I tried a multitude of options. Inc registering by sms for mobile banking, speaking to telephone banking and, yes, finally going to the branch. When I went to the branch a very pleasant fellow called me the next day and stated that they would have send me forms to fill as they could not find any record of the application I did online. No forms ever came. In addition while at the branch I asked them to cancel the con that is e-statements (i remember because I had to write a letter as they would not accept instructions unless written) and go back to sending me paper statements. Up to today I still get e-statements. After all that, in my frustration, I wrote them an email in Jan this year to the email address they advertise all over their branches for concerns. No response to the email yet. So my experience with Standard Chartered may not be typical but it has been frustrating (and may make one heck of a blog post one day) in fact the only time I got people to jump is when I asked for contacts for their media team so I could get an official response to my grievances for publication. Having said all that I did apply for online banking again last week. maybe this time someone is listening? Its been more than the 2 days though. Perhaps another trip to my branch in town required. If any of you know anyone I can contact on the inside please share details! -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

One thing I know with banks as the grow, customer service goes out of the window. this is the case with Equity and Barclays. But I think Standard Chartered may be heading there. If it comes to a point you have to complain and get an official statement on the state of affairs, I'd say that's the point I am always ready to call it quits. Anyway, since I have had online banking I haven't need to visit a branch in a long time, so may they have changed. It was the only sane bank remaining. KCB is not so bad these days, though they do not have Online Banking but they do have some sort of a site you can download static statement, and the lady at CC told me that was Online Banking. I have heard from within he grapevine they are working on this but I can't be too sure. It is just frustrating to bank in Kenya. And to do almost everything else.

Hello all, I have been using NIC online for sometime now and i have been satisfied .. This is what I can do ; I can check my account, transfer funds to other accounts, including other banks in Kenya, and since am always out of the country this really helps me pay my bills since all I need is ones account number. I understander its also posible to pay bills from it but I have never tried that service.... And what do you mean its been down three weeks I used it last week on friday?? Good afternoon all. Here is a quick follow up. Energized by this email thread I went to a Standard Chartered branch today to follow up on why I never get online banking. The problem apparently is that i have been applying online! I was even told, "öf course there is no way for us to check your signature online"! I asked why then did they have an option for registering for the service online? They didn't know but said it should be taken down as applications made online "never go through"! Compare that with this information that is displayed after you submit your online application: Thank you for applying for our Internet Banking services Please note: You w ill receive your user name on the email you specified in the form. You will receive your password via courier enabling you to start iBanking service. You may receive a call from our Phone Banking Officer to confirm your details. If you have any questions please contact Phone Banking at +254 20 3293900 quoting your Reference No. All of that is nonsense apparently as no will ever call you as the system never knows you have applied. I gave up asked for online banking form and filled it in at the branch. D -- Pamoja e:daudi.were@gmail.com <e%3Adaudi.were@gmail.com> skype: d.were

A case of bureaucracy meets IT? The bureaucrats/bank (read it how you like) will not allow the online subscription as they want to "see" you sign the form (i.e. in person). IT set it up anyway and don't really care if it works. Neither side has sat down and tried to find a way to make it a useful feature for their customers. e.g. Allow customers to apply online, then process the application and ask you to come in at your convenience to sign and pick your login password. @Daudi, Maybe you have issues with the people at the bank that is 'here for people', 'here for good.' It should not take long to get your Online Banking working.
