Safaricom cloud management howto

Hello Curious, anyone here willing to share how Safaricom cloud is setup? I mean I tried googling and I can't find much technical information other than the normal crap that appear on business publication. For example, do they use xen for vitualization? What can be adjusted on the console, CPU, RAM, storage ? Is the storage local or shared? For example on EC2, you can set up a VM with storage on SAN or local to the instance? You able to change the firewall? Do you have ability to choose any distribution? For example, on EC2, one can choose go with either RedHat, Ubuntu or even export a local installation as EMI Anyway, I guess I asking for a technical introduction to Safaricom cloud. Got interested because a friend of mine is interested in using them and I couldn't seem to find anything except this link http://www.safaricom.co.ke/business/solutions-by-business-needs/grow-your-bu... Regards, Muriithi

For virtualization they use vmware, though i dont have any more info just that. On Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 9:27 PM, William Muriithi <william.muriithi@gmail.com> wrote:

read up on cisco vmware and emc (VCE) that should give you an idea. Unfortunately for actual implementation you need to sit down with a technicla person from there. Good day.
From what i know:
Safaricom currently is only offering IAAS, they are still haggling with vendor licenses for SAAS and PAAS. I believe that these issues will be sorted soon so that we can enjoy the full cloud offerings. For IAAS, they provision Hardware specs and present the VM for you to install the O/S,App of your choice. I think they have all the hypervisors in their Datacenters (I would, not trusting a single vendor, negotiation purposes etc) Please correct me on this, if i am wrong. ./Sam On Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 10:21 AM, John Gitau <jgitau@gmail.com> wrote:

William, Cloud services in Kenya are still on the infant stages, in my opinion, their are two solutions available in the market ie pure back up and DR hosted services. Since am new in these industry I cannot comment alot, but if interested on more info, contact me offlist and I shall give you a pre sales engineer to explain the concepts to you. rgds Antony.......

Just to add up onto what John has put: Virtualization Hypervisor: VMware Storage: EMC Distribution: You can choose whatever you want or import the image I also believe they use VMware vCloud™ Director for automation and provisioning. The VMware vCloud™ Director also adds a self service portal. During the Cisco Expo 2011 there was a demo on how the Safaricom cloud works. In regards to the Hypervisor multi-vendor claim by Sam, I think this adds a layer of issues especially when it comes to the provisioning and management. Kindly visit http://vcloud.vmware.com/ for information on how VMware and their partners (network and storage) power the public clouds. As John suggested look for a Safcom techie who works in the data center and he can expound on how the Safcom Cloud is built. .... so what y'all saying is.... safcom's cloud is some VM'd enterprise cpanel thingy... right? <script kiddie> :-)

Wrong....please just have a look at VMware Cisco Emc (vce). Technically as far as I know you get just iaas and maybe standalone services like storage for now. Again call safcom, ask for a technical person. Unless one responds here. Sent from my iPad On 15 Oct 2012, at 21:05, "John Doe Smith Kamau KipNg'etich Jones" <skunkworks.ku@gmail.com> wrote:

I wouldn't compare it to cpanel and what it does, but all in all before you compare it to cpanel I would wish if you could go back to the characteristics of cloud computing and its definition then we can somehow be on the same page in regards to matching the various characteristics to the various tools and enablement of the various cloud features, that make something to fit the cloud computing definition. Also as you read on VCE, look at cloud automation, provisioning and management, as this are some of the features that transform the VCE stack to a cloud solution. Can somebody with links to Safcom Technical get us the exact facts before we continue throwing our own definitions on what the Safcom Cloud is and what it is not and what is offered.
