Any Virtualization Experts Here?

I have a laptop, HP 6710B running Windows Server 2008 (x64) R2 STD which I'd like to virtualize. I actually intend to run Windows 7 on this laptop but install VMWare Wkstn and get the Windows SVR running inside. All my attempts to use VMWare converter to virtualize this live machine have failed. Did anyone succeed in doing this? I've already googled for possible solutions so don't suggest it:) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Could be your processor. Is the Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit? What's your processor model and number (include the number too e.g. E8600)? Any case, your processor may need to support VT (virtualization) and have it turned on thru the bios (so u're bios should also allow u to turn on the flag). Have a look at the following link for more information: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=dis... If u scroll further near the bottom u will see that laptops might have difficulties. --- On Fri, 7/2/10, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote: From: Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> Subject: [Skunkworks] Any Virtualization Experts Here? Windows Server 2008 R2, 64-bit

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU, T8100 @2.10GHz. 4GB RAM installed.
Any case, your processor may need to support VT (virtualization) and have it turned on thru the bios (so u're bios should also allow u to turn on the flag).
Are you saying that it is necessary for me to turn on the VT feature of the processor in order for me to be able to run vmware converter on the machine successfully? I am at the stage of converting the running system into a vmware image, if I may call it so. What I'd like to do is to make a vmware image of this very host machine, format the machine, install Windows 7 64-bit, install vmware workstation (7.1) and ultimately run the win2008 server under virtualization. I am not sure if I am clearly explaining my needs.. I am able to enable VT via the BIOS, but I think I don't need it at this stage. I will need when I've installed Windows 7 and Vmware Wkstn 7.1, right?
Have a look at the following link for more information:

I think my laptop is not amongst those mentioned, because I can enable VT in the BIOS, no? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Have you tried Sun System's oracle virtualbox? It works perfectly on my machine but on a different purpose not like yours but i believe it should suit your need. George 0725 671 644 On Sat, Jul 3, 2010 at 4:39 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

I beg to differ with Amarjit on virtualbox being a better host. We have been running a virtualization project for the last two years, and virtualbox failed spectacularly on Solaris: we lost money buying a legit version of vmware (but went baremetal on ESX4). Wash, Is the VM workstation where you are transferring the win2k8 running on x64? Coz Vmware Workstation running on 32bit O/S will not accept a guest running 64bit. sam. Dear Samuel, That is interesting to know that Virtualbox failed spectacularly. I am not advocating for them here but would be interested to know a bit more on what exactly happened, if that is ok with you to share such info. Personally have used the two and prefer it so much more to VMware. I am running it on a Debian 5.0 x32 bit for the last 8 months or so and not had a blip ever since migrating. Not tested it on Solaris though so I will not peg it down to OS compatibility issues. Have a great day! BTW Washington you dont need to install Win 7 if you have win 2008 R2 server on the machine. The Win 7 & Server 2008 R2 support a technology called Boot from VHD where you need a VHD and run a script to write the boot sector and when powering the machine you get an option of Win 7 which boots normally. Also why dont you run Hyper-V from Server 2008? and install win 7...both options are stress free and can install other OS. BTW i have similar scenario like yours and am running 4 OS from Hyper-V regards, Roy. On Mon, Jul 5, 2010 at 2:06 PM, Amarjit Labhuram <amarjit.labhuram@gmail.com

I'd like to virtualize a Windows 2k8 x64 running on a laptop. I am just at the image creating stage. I need to create and stash the image aside...FIRST:-) That is what is failing when I am using converter.

Wash.. First off, what are the specs for the below: Vmware Workstation: Anything prior to v7 will not support Win2k8 Target Host specs Please note that you need to install VMWare Wkstation on the target machine (where you want to run the win2k8x64) then use the import wizard: [image: Import.gif] On Mon, Jul 5, 2010 at 10:23 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

I gave up on this task. I've decided to run my laptop on Windows Server 2008 anyway. I can virtualize anything else I need.
