BTW Washington you dont need to install Win 7 if you have win 2008 R2 server on the machine. The Win 7 & Server 2008 R2 support a technology called Boot from VHD where you need a VHD and run a script to write the boot sector and when powering the machine you get an option of Win 7 which boots normally.

Also why dont you run Hyper-V from Server 2008? and install win 7...both options are stress free and can install other OS.

BTW i have similar scenario like yours and am running 4 OS from Hyper-V

Roy.

Dear Samuel,

That is interesting to know that Virtualbox failed spectacularly. I am not advocating for them here but would be interested to know a bit more on what exactly happened, if that is ok with you to share such info.

Personally have used the two and prefer it so much more to VMware. I am running it on a Debian 5.0 x32 bit for the last 8 months or so and not had a blip ever since migrating. Not tested it on Solaris though so I will not peg it down to OS compatibility issues.

Have a great day!

I beg to differ with Amarjit on virtualbox being a better host.

We have been running a virtualization project for the last two years, and virtualbox failed spectacularly on Solaris: we lost money buying a legit version of vmware (but went baremetal on ESX4).

Wash, Is the VM workstation where you are transferring the win2k8 running on x64? Coz Vmware Workstation running on 32bit O/S will not accept a guest running 64bit.

Virtual box cannot convert live machine to virtual machine though it is a much better host than VMware.

Have you tried Sun System's oracle virtualbox? It works perfectly on my machine but on a different purpose not like yours but i believe it should suit your need.

Can it help me convert a live machine into a virtual one? I once tried it but still found VMware wkstn better:)
