Safaricom's half-year net profit down 47pc

Skunks Safaricom has just announced its half year results that has seen its half year profits dip by 47% . Is this as a result of the low calling rates regime coming home to roost or is it just that uchumi ni mbaya na watu wamesota ? http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Corporate+News/-/539550/1270124/-/s9381i/... What are your thoughts ? Kev

Just realized that its as a result of operating expenses going up not lower revenues. Revenues actually shot up. Kev On Wed, Nov 9, 2011 at 6:09 PM, Kevin Omondi <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> wrote:

Profits really are the bottom line. Wallmart, as of 2010 fiscal, had revenues of over 400B. Apple 68B. Same market valuation at the time. HP still has higher revenue than Apple. The real test for Safaricom will not be maintaining revenue growth but profitability. That's what shot it into the limelight. Funny fact, the company with the highest revenues in Kenya as of end of 2010, is KenolKobil, not Safaricom. We know about Safaricom because of profitability. -- Regards, Phares Kaboro Kariuki -----Original Message----- From: Kevin Omondi <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> Sender: skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2011 18:10:50 To: skunkworks<skunkworks@my.co.ke> Reply-To: Skunkworks Mailing List <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Safaricom's half-year net profit down 47pc _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke ------------ List info, subscribe/unsubscribe http://orion.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Rules http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 ------------ Other services @ http://my.co.ke

I tend to think the CEO is spending too much time on "extracurricular" activities, too much tweeting, too many social functions, the guy is literally all over the place. When does he work to protect our money as shareholders? Their expenses going up by about 4billion in the 1st half though attributed to economic environment could see lots of guys out of work. Non of the other telcos are making money either so by extension fewer jobs in that sector. Sent from my iPad On Nov 9, 2011, at 9:06 PM, "Phares Kariuki" <pkariuki@gmail.com> wrote:

@Jared, Hehehe... I am suprised that he hasn't posted on skunkworks, but I suspect he is lurking herein... Bobby...are you here, Bobby??? Timo.

Hehehe, Bobby better speak up! About banks being a cartel, I wish I could amass forces to destroy this cartel. They literary impose fines to loan borrowers at the slightest loopholes, hike interest rates at will and determine their own terms.... all in the name of maintaining profitability. I still banking is an industry that not 'directly' consumer controlled, like wen people stop calling or 'kuhama'. Hopes for eradicating this ill is not even a thought to consider, requires political will and so many other factors that it just seems like a nightmare... Solution to tame them is simpler than you thought, simply avoid bank loans whenever/wherever you can. Banks are trained/professional conpple. They will *BEG* you to borrow, *demand* for payment. Penalize you at will - don't even have a ear to hear you so long as you owe them. Never been a victim, but i know pple who go to their knees to plead with banks - oh kenyan banks!!! Wilson./

@Phares, Apples revenue for 2010 were USD 108B, not 68B.

Come on guys...what does tweeting have to do with profits......their explanations make alot of sense....Weak Shilling, drop in calling rates etc... Layoff the CEO....unlike Banks which can hike their rates to shore up profits....Telcos cannot easily do that since they aren't in a cartel...yet! Surprised by the kind of reasoning exhibited by techies. Costs went up as Safaricom have been investing in their network quality due to increased calling brought about by lower rates, now meeting 6 of 8 CCK quality metrics compared to 3 or 4 last year. There was also a Kes 1.4 billion forex charge caused by shillings depreciation, the same read 0 in the last half. The CEO is in touch with the customers and some shareholders think it's a waste of time? Reminds me of some Parliament seatings On Thursday, 10 November 2011, Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> wrote:
