[OT] What Mozilla should know about internet in Kenya

Hello folks! I will be in a panel in Singapore later today where my role shall be pointing out the various 'myths' about internet in Kenya and generally the global south. I would like to request for pointers and direction to some other handy info to paint a clear picture about this. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Stephen.

Stephen, What is Mozilla and what are their interests in KE, or the "generally global south" (whatever that is)? As you can see, your request is generally vague. Well, from my understanding, the short notice you've given notwithstanding. Perhaps you should have started a thread on this about a week or two to the date of the panel. That way we could have dissected into it's relevance and given our views for your collation. On Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 2:21 AM, Wanjau <wanjaustev@gmail.com> wrote:

Is it that most people don't know about the Opera browser or that they think it is only for mobiles? A quick look at this page show that Opera not only matches but has more features than IE, Firefox *and* Chrome: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers I guess if you look long enough you will find a report in your favour, but I am assuming that Wikipedia is pretty much neutral. So, anyone care to guess as to the reason for various browsers popularity? Herd mentality maybe (everyone says it is great....)? Just wondering.... (And yes, I use Opera [?]) On Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 9:01 PM, Tusker 21 <tusker212@gmail.com> wrote:

Tell them about the way Mozilla consumes memory; and continues to eat more with time, even though the very same tabs are open.. Tell them with our 'small purchasing power' (in the general south) - this is not fun with computers still running 1GB memory or even 2GB..

LOL...With your 2nd point, they would obviously have failed to understand why RAM is still expensive in the "general south"! @Wanjau - forget Mozilla. Please carry one or two Tiger fruits for me on your return. I will meet you at JKIA if you do this:) On Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 10:18 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

I agree, Silicon Developers should be given basic laptops to test their products on. Facebook also has issues with 2 GB RAM and their photo upload app which sees a crash in Flash. Guess when you are developing on a cutting edge PC, you forget your users are on low end machines that can barely pull through.

Heya Listers! Let me first begin by thanking all of you who replied to my E-mail by either making it more off topic or otherwise :) It is true there once existed IE then Firefox and then the rest followed. This is a win-win for Mozilla since that was its primary reason to exist, which is to bring sanity to the web and push for open standards on the web. If it were not for Mozilla, it is highly likely that the only browser that would be there in the market currently would be IE! Mozilla gives you a voice on the web to say what aggrieves you or what doesn't make you happy. If it is the RAM consumption, browser keeps crashing or any other error. See [2] for a fix on that. Mozilla answers to no one but you. We do not have shareholders who keep us on the toes but our users are our greatest responsibility. We are the browser with a mission and a browser guided by principles..Mozilla has its system of tracking bugs at [3] and I would recommend you to file any bug related to our products there. There is almost someone always on the other side waiting for you to click the save this bug button! At the panel I talked about the costs of internet and that go back button w/o a reload would save us some Mbs :)I also suggested that they should look into mobile as most of the peeps here access the web via their mobile devices and not any type of devices but the likes of Nokia 1680c. This was as per the data provided at Wordcamp 2012. Our desktop users are missing out on great features like Firefox sync on their 'low-end' mobile phones. Firefox for Android now supports the ARM V6 gadgets and I advice you give it a run and if you find any errors go to [3]. FYI, Mozilla is coming up with its own OS for Mobile and Tablets which shall be launched next year. It is currently in its testing phases with support on several devices. The OS is made of CSS, JavaScript and HTML5. This OS is targeted for the global south who can afford Smartphone worth $100 USD and lower. This is an ignored market by both Android and obviously APPL plus the likes of RIM. So we are not coming in as competitors! As always Mozilla's cornerstone is volunteers and everyone is welcome to join. You do not have to be C++ guru or even know what that means you just need to be a web lover to contribute. There is a Mozilla Community meet-up coming on 8th December in Nairobi...Follow @mozillakenya on Twitter, Like facebook.com/mozillakenya or subscribe to our low-traffic mlist at [4] for announcements on events and other Mozilla related stuff. 2. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram 3. http://bugzilla.mozilla.org 4. https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/community-kenya Cheers, Stephen.
Our desktop users are missing out on great features like Firefox sync on their ‘low-end' mobile phones.
As always Mozilla’s cornerstone is volunteers and everyone is welcome to join. You do not have to be C++ guru or even know what that means you just need to be a web lover to contribute. There is a Mozilla Community meet-up coming on 8th December in Nairobi…Follow @mozillakenya on Twitter, Like facebook.com/mozillakenya or subscribe to our low-traffic mlist at [4] for announcements on events and other Mozilla related stuff.

Hello folks!
I will be in a panel in Singapore later today where my role shall be pointing out the various 'myths' about internet in Kenya and generally the global south.
I would like to request for pointers and direction to some other handy info to paint a clear picture about this.
Thanks in advance.

Timothy, I hope you are asking about how to mask your passwords that you have marked as "remember password" from the unwanted eyes :) If that is the case, then the master password feature should be your friend. Read more about it at [1]. To Wash, I must start by apologizing for not having honored your belated request, I know it is wrong in all manner but I hope you will find some way of making that a comment that shall not interfere with the way code works :) I am glad you can attest that you have used our efficient bug tracking system :) Netscape was actually inherited by Mozilla since it was crashing out of the market as a result of the power of the then mighty IE so Mozilla took up its code and open sourced it and here we are now. From Netscape we also took with us the father of JS Brendan whom I met in Singapore :) The flash crashing issue also happens in other browsers and not only ours for the reason that we cannot access the flash code to nail out the differences or whatever causes the crash. Sync actually helps to carry your bookmarks with you, remember passwords etc, so when you log in and sync on another PC/laptop you will have the same experience as on your PC/laptop. We adopted the Rapid Release Cycle after Firefox 4 last year so that we could churn out new features while fixing existing bugs in current versions. There is an opt out to these very regular updates which can be accessed by adopting the (Extended Support Release) ESR cycle. More at [2]. I hope that sounds good, if not, you can always get back at me. 1. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-master-password-protect-stored-logi... 2. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ Cheers, Steve. It is true there once existed IE then Firefox and then the rest followed. This is a win-win for Mozilla since that was its primary reason to exist, which is to bring sanity to the web and push for open standards on the web. If it were not for Mozilla, it is highly likely that the only browser that would be there in the market currently would be IE!

I think Firefox came out much later as a result of some changes somewhere. There existed IE and Netscape Navigator, then Netscape Communicator.

I agree with the bug tracking. I have used it and got answered in a record time - with a solution.

Whenever I download Firefox, there is always a mobile version suggested - for Android. So you suggested that they should look into a version for Windows Mobile and Symbian??
This was as per the data provided at Wordcamp 2012. Our desktop users are missing out on great features like Firefox sync on their ‘low-end' mobile phones.
Chrome-sync vs Firefox-sync; Chrome OS vs Firefox/Mozilla OS... Actually, I have never used Chrome sync so no idea about what I'd gain with FF sync either.

FF development cycle (not sure about the correct reference to churning out new versions) every 2 or so months has been an eyesore to me. Still, they have flashplugin crashing always..
