Well, it depends. MySQL has a limit on the permissible number of concurrent connections. I believe any DBMS does. Assuming on the other hand that they are using fewer than maximum connections, that means that all the transactions are being done using the same connection and that might to some extent explain why it takes too long to load a page that is mostly plain text (All the text is coming from the database). I think...taking into account the nature of the data, and the fact that all types of transactions are read transactions, concurrency issues are not so much at stake here and it would be really nice if they had replicated the data to like 50 databases. That way the transactions will be satisfied more quickly and more efficiently. Im just assuming, I have no knowledge of what happens behind the scenes. No serious website will have capacity to do with concurrent database connections. Any competent web developer will implement any of the various ways of getting around this, up to and including caches and multiple databases.
