Organization (Should have replied to the contributions post)

Hi all, This was initially a reply to the server contribution post...decided to post it as a new post. For those of you who know me physically, you probably know that I look nothing like a Mugo...so I keep trying to prove my Kikuyu side. I have a few arguments on this post...I would love to contribute, but I feel we need an organization structure for skunkworks. We need a website, we need founding members recognized, we need to take our role as the key players in the ICT industry in this country. We need organization that might earn us a place to speak on our rights as professionals and as freelancers. We need a team that will spearhead these operations, a voice that can represent us. A Board... I think we have matured to that level. I know this just sparks politics, but I believe we need it at this point. David. -- ------------- http://blog.majibu.com

@David you are correct and this should happen long term BUT organization = salaries, budgets etc ( one part of it ) Who will fund the above? Lets leave the stories and theories aside. Put your money where it will help on the spreadsheet. We are struggling with a mere server purchase something we should have bought by tomorrow and moved on with other issues, watuu wako wapi? I appreciate what everyone on the list has contributed and have achieved in the last 2 days. Amazing people on this list and hope it will all work out. This is my opinion, so please correct as necessary. -- ( the rise of Yoda! Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi... )

@Aki, You are right on the realities of these things, but did you know that there are funds to do such things? This government has allocated so much money to youth projects, I believe this would be a really great project and we can create projects with our expertise that will earn for us and for Skunkworks as an organization. We consist of the best ICT professionals and there is a whole lot of revenue around that. Labor can be voluntary and am sure we can get policies pushed. David. The server will be bought then what? Mugo has valid points that can be discussed alongside purchase of the server. What next for skunkworks? I think we suffer from 'too much talk'.Its about time we acted. I am aware that this discussion has been had on skunkworks before but the fruits are yet to be seen. We can start by simply listing what we would like to see changed and move on from there. Ama we all resign from our jobs and form a company called skunkworks IT. All, Am still looking at it as a business person...dont get me wrong, I already pledged my 3k for the server...question, where is this server? Where have we been running from? Who will own this server? My point is, we are running, we still will after the server issues are sorted...cant we start off with the contributions as little capital for the server? To know that we actually own a bit of the server? Call it politics, I call it avoiding future woes. Had some of the issues we have with land, mau, everything been addressed early enough, every Kenyan would be happier than they are. David. I've also made my pledge, but can't help thinking abt such things as vision and mission. I really do think we need to have a well thought-out long-term plan if we are to start venturing into such matters as these. You are right on the realities of these things, but did you know that there are funds to do such things? This government has allocated so much money to youth projects, I believe this would be a really great project and we can create projects with our expertise that will earn for us and for Skunkworks as an organization.
We consist of the best ICT professionals and there is a whole lot of revenue around that.
Labor can be voluntary and am sure we can get policies pushed.
David.
@David, you know you are right and many on this share similar ideas. Whether govt will help to buy an ailing public server remains to be seen, so the best test of this in front of you. In the meantime, we have to try and do what we can.
Haiya, asante sana for your contribution! Umeweka kwa spreadsheet? :-)))

Yes, @Simon, you have just said the words I wanted to say in so many words...Mission, Vision, where are we headed? What are the goals? I can tell you something, I am not happy at where I am in life today, I call myself a pioneer in the Kenyan web industry yet I failed to plan some things and I have been overtaken by my own students...while that is a good thing to see students prosper, it should also have earned me some place...I believe we need to do that before some millionaire comes and buys off skunkworks from I dont know who...by the way, I still need to know who runs skunkworks, last time I checked, @Aki denied big time having anything to do with the running, yet he is the one campaigning for the funds... @David, let me clarify my position. I'm not running for anything nor am I a spotlight person. Infact, I dislike any attention... I'm campaigning for the funds so that we do not miss a chance to resolve what is in our hands. We at this particlar time are at a crucial stage, do we just let a server die on us and we look for shortcuts ? Hakuna. Thus am avoiding introduction of other things related to server thread as it does not help anyone. As you may have read my thread initiative : 2010 : Kenyan Developers Year and within it, I pointed out that we need to work with KICTB and other agencies. With support from Kenyan Developers and all well wishers, we ( meaning all or any listers ) intend to do something. So I've already commited 2010 as part of my project program. Please take time to read it.
All other initiatives are very welcome but time to DO or NOT is near. So each and everyone has to take that responsibilty and make it work for themselves and others. And I do apologise if I was out of line in my earlier response. I'm not on this list to fight with anyone. :-) And a big thanks for your contribution. Asante -- ( the rise of Yoda! Ready are you? @Aki...I get your point, but as we move, just like techlist said, we can discuss other things as well. I love your ideas and dedication to Skunkworks, I believe am not the only one who has confused you for the administrator. Am with you, a keen follower of your posts as well, infact, I may not always read each thread but I make sure I read posts you start keenly. You can get what I mean with this. Everything is sweet until there is money involved. Not that there hasnt been someone spending some cash and resources for us to keep going but we would love to own up to some of the responsibility and as you have seen, people are willing to be part of this because its a good cause. Defined structures might kill Skunkworks. I find it much more relaxed and easy knowing that I dont have to be elected for anything. Let people interact and if by chance they find something they might require to collaborate on,let them do it at their own discretion with their own micro-structures. The goodwill extended by the moderators and the admins is enough as I see it and when they feel they need to relinquish that role, other people can extend the same will though not in a politically defined modus. Someone asked who will own(registered owners) the server once it is bought. Personally I did not pledge my few coins to own a piece of the server but to sustain the forum. I would expect the forum to grow into the future, founders' existence not withstanding. Recently when rules were made tighter, there were lots of hullabaloo, it tells you how much people dont like working within structures. 2009/12/11 Simon Mbuthia <simon.mbuthia@gmail.com>

You can get what I mean with this. Everything is sweet until there is money involved. Not that there hasnt been someone spending some cash and resources for us to keep going but we would love to own up to some of the responsibility and as you have seen, people are willing to be part of this because its a good cause.

@ David, right now we don't want to procrastinate. Contribute what you are comfortable with and let the server be put in place then we shall talk about the organizational structure and what have you. As far as I can see, the organization of acquiring the server, has been splendid. Politics aside=progress! Methinks!
@David you are correct and this should happen long term BUT organization = salaries, budgets etc ( one part of it )
Who will fund the above? Lets leave the stories and theories aside. Put your money where it will help on the spreadsheet. We are struggling with a mere server purchase something we should have bought by tomorrow and moved on with other issues, watuu wako wapi?
I appreciate what everyone on the list has contributed and have achieved in the last 2 days. Amazing people on this list and hope it will all work out.
This is my opinion, so please correct as necessary.
