Re: [Skunkworks] Paypal in Kenya!

The Paypal card is not a top up card. Its a Master Card debit card that has direct access to your Paypal funds. It gives you the third option to withdraw funds from Paypal... depending on where you live of course. So in the states, you can receive a check, withrdaw to you Bank account or use the Debit card at your nearest ATM. I donno about outside US but to get this card you need to verify you Social Security Number... I think for credit rating or something like that. then they mail it to your address As far as I know about withdrawing, if you've had a Paypal account forever in Kenya you have always been able to send and receive funds so this is nothing new. The catch here has always been Withdrawing and adding funds. They used to allow adding funds from a credit card then they stopped it and opted to have funds added via Bank. So to Withdraw your Paypal account has to be linked with a Bank account. So if you are blessed enough to have a US Bank account you can add and verify everything online. So if you get a chance to travel to the States, carry you Passport and Kenyan DL and go open an account before you leave. hope this clears the air Steve Obbayi SKYPE: sobbayi http://sobbayi.com http://blog.sobbayi.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edwin Kaduki" <kaduki@edwinkaduki.com> To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 7:44:50 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Paypal in Kenya! Willie.... Until Last 2 month, there was no local payment gateway Willie..... you have been using your Visa Debit Cards which are processed via international gateways like Paypal and the rest but the big thing is what happens for E-commerce in Kenya or even money transfer from diaspora.... For you, you do purchase online and merchants gets their money from their local banks, but when guys from diaspora buy from our online e-commerce via their Visa cards... we cannot get that cash from our local banks.. thats the Game

OK, so whatever Paypal and Equity have in the works is supposed to bridge that chasm when they roll out, right?

I&M bank have a fully fledged Online Merchant service which allows you to link your shopping cart to your merchant account with them. Anyone can pay you online and you receive the funds here... platform provided by iVeri - a South African e-commerce enabler Brian On Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 3:38 PM, Josy Ngatia <josyveros@gmail.com> wrote:

Josy, great prompt response, and its quite disturbing news 2 ecommerce in kenya. About the payment gateway, im aware of only one that is certfied by CBK and its jambopay. What other gateways are certified so far? (im in a quest for a local solution....not paypal) On 8/26/10, Josy Ngatia <josyveros@gmail.com> wrote:

Brian... very true...have even tried I&M bank...and for you to integrate you need $2500 and a monthly fee of $200 and also commission on sales... these fee are prohibitive but compared to gateways like Paypal which are free to open accounts and no monthly fee and their transactions being low are very great. Willie we have another one based on mobile payment called ipay which uses MPESA and ZAP but this is not much open to international E-commerce

Brian With the facts provided i guess I&M is nt among the economical ones. For instance the jambopay guys claim to have interfaced with I&M, so i guess they cover those I&M costs. Josy i have one issue with IPay and the likes, the 'instant' transfer of money 2 the recipient. This will not be healthy in purchase of tangible goods online. Especially if u get the goods are not in good condition. There needs 2 be a 'waiting' time before a seller can actually access his/her received money. Something like 14days or so. If this is so then it means the payment gateway acts as a 'bank', hence CBK comes into play. On 8/26/10, Josy Ngatia <josyveros@gmail.com> wrote:
