[SKUNKWORKS] Safaricom To Give Box Decoder Users Free Internet For Six Months

This will be a hot topic tomorrow when Safaricom finally launch this set top box (hybrid media streaming box). We managed to capture some detail <http://www.techweez.com/2015/05/07/safaricom-to-give-box-decoder-users-free-internet-for-six-months/>at the launch and it seems Safaricom is prepared to make a big onslaught in the home content department. What do you guys think? How much is it going for?? I go get one immediately:) Does that Free-Internet-for-6-months come with a FUP? On 7 May 2015 at 10:21, Martin Gicheru via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

It seems there's nothing revolutionary about this so called 'Big Box'! I expected to see unlimited data and more than the usual FTA channels! I'm afraid Zuku(when they are not down) is still King of triple-play, their marketing team should NOT lose sleep over this joke by Safaricom! ./mouz On May 7, 2015 10:26 AM, "Martin Gicheru via skunkworks" < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Most people are asking if the 6GB - 1K bundle for theBIGbox will be sufficient to handle say Netflix's 800(Netflix) + 450(unotelly) + 1000 (Safaricom 4G bundle) - PER MONTH SETUP If it works then for 350+ channels it might be a good selling point. Anyone tried this out? On Thu, May 7, 2015 at 10:21 AM, Martin Gicheru via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

6gb probably won't be enough. According to Google, Netflix uses around 1gb of data per hour, so a 6hr binge on House of Cards would wipe that bundle like a fat kid eating mandazi. And you still wouldn't have finished the season. :( Regards, John K. On 11 May 2015 at 13:39, Patrick Kariuki via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Hi @John I watch netflix and my meagre bundle can still survive, what netflix does if you have a slow network (Like I do) they will not air on HD hence the data usage will not be humongous. another thing I tried playing around with the big Box, yes you can access the internet and may be netflix but it does not give the rich look and feel of a smart TV or a PS Console while accessing the on demand TV Apps. If you have a smart TV, FTA or Digital TV and an internet provider you definitely do not need the Big Box, you will access on line streaming TV seamlessly. Let us watch out it is hoped to be a game changer Regards Calvin On Mon, May 11, 2015 at 3:57 PM, John K. via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I think this is a good deal for those not served by the likes of Zuku. I would buy it for the Free to air channels and the fact that its a router, but the price is rather high. On Mon, May 11, 2015 at 4:32 PM, Patrick Kariuki via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Yep, has to be paid. But it's not that expensive, $3-5 per month. CactusVpn smart dns <https://billing.cactusvpn.com/aff.php?aff=1279> only (no vpn) is $3.45 per month, if you pay for the whole year its $27. Regards, John K. not really; I have a VPN set up on my linode in the states in one of my clients servers that I manage (shhhhhh!) so 0 cost for me. They have 2TB transfer so again, 0 cost on VPN. ᐧ

Curious if anyone has managed to create their own smart dns server? I have access to barely used servers like ^Jangita above in the US, if we could set up our own smart dns server then those of us that pay for it can save big. Regards, John K. If you can configure your Zuku CPE in bridge mode, then I suppose you can connect this "small box" via Ethernet on the Zuku bridge and use it as primary router/WiFi. I haven't accessed the configuration for the Ethernet so ask Techweez! On 15 May 2015 at 11:32, Bwana Lawi via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Ive had the Box since launch date and one thing is clear. It has a serious problem connecting with the internet. Hotspot only lasts for around 5 minutes and the internet disappears. The internet on the box itself disappears every 30 minutes whether in use or not and need to be restarted to work again and the cycle goes on and on. Taken the box back and the customer care guys are saying the box is ok and the problem is likely network related and will be fixed soon. If you are buying the box for the internet then you would better hold on till they fix the issue. On the digital channels not really concerned. We're all entitled to our opinions and in my experience so far, the box *serves its purpose.* In so far as pricing is concerned for 4G, a quick peep at what our good neighbours are offering for 4G bundles and you start to get the bigger picture; http://www.mtn.co.rw/Content/Pages/341/4G_LTE_packages http://smile.co.tz/products-services/ On Mon, May 18, 2015 at 1:39 PM, Martin Gicheru via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

Ive had the Box since launch date and one thing is clear. It has a serious problem connecting with the internet. Hotspot only lasts for around 5 minutes and the internet disappears. The internet on the box itself disappears every 30 minutes whether in use or not and need to be restarted to work again and the cycle goes on and on.
Taken the box back and the customer care guys are saying the box is ok and the problem is likely network related and will be fixed soon. If you are buying the box for the internet then you would better hold on till they fix the issue. On the digital channels not really concerned.

800(Netflix) + 450(unotelly) + 1000 (Safaricom 4G bundle) - PER MONTH SETUP
If it works then for 350+ channels it might be a good selling point. Anyone tried this out?

@Riyaz I actually did. Somewhere in the realm of 80 to 110GB. But: I do lots of youtube. Hence my question about youtube. Because I suspect youtube accounts for nearly 1/3 to half my consumption. On Wed, May 13, 2015 at 7:59 PM, Riyaz Bachani via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
Has anyone on Zuku measured how many GB they consume in a given month ?

I think this is a good deal for those not served by the likes of Zuku. I would buy it for the Free to air channels and the fact that its a router, but the price is rather high.

6gb probably won't be enough. According to Google, Netflix uses around 1gb of data per hour, so a 6hr binge on House of Cards would wipe that bundle like a fat kid eating mandazi. And you still wouldn't have finished the season. :(

Someone confirm that Youtube is passed through the service without attracting bundle penalties. If so then it makes sense, loads of sense. I tried looking at their mini site but the youtube angle is conspicuously absent. On Mon, May 11, 2015 at 1:39 PM, Patrick Kariuki via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:
