Internet Traffic in Kenya

According to Deutsche Bank Securities Inc dated May 15, 2011 99% of ALL internet traffic in Kenya comes from Mobile Operators as 3G, EDGE and GPRS. What is happening or is going happen to our ISPs? Do you think this is accurate? David K -- [Asentric Consulting Ltd] "The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in war." - Navy SEAL INSTRUCTOR

I think this is accurate David, case in point since mobile Internet (read Edge and 3G started becoming popular), the number of Internet Users short from 3 million to 10 million as per the recent CCK stats, does that ring a bell ? :-) On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 11:55 AM, Denis G. With Safaricom having 92% of Internet customers, we can say that the report's error rate is less than 8%. Though maybe they meant traffic is from Mobile Network Operators, rather than mobile phones

The question here should be, what is the market share held by: Access Kenya KDN Telkom... Another question to ponder - is Telkom here considered a Mobile Network provider. In short, the above 3 companies and other ISPs hold a 1% share of internet traffic. On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 12:30 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

It looks like this report is about last mile services and not the backbone. As you know Telkom, Jamii and KDN (+other ISPs) have the lions share of the backbone, which the mobile services use. Lastmile is dominated by mobile and so the report is accurate. Mucheru On Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 9:44 PM, Nicholas Mutinda <mutindah@gmail.com> wrote:

Somehow related to this, how comes when KDN fiber goes dark, the knock off effect seems so huge? What is the difference with Safcom coz I rarely see or hear anyone on this list complain that Safcom's network is down. On Thu, Jul 7, 2011 at 8:27 AM, Joseph Mucheru <jmucheru@google.com> wrote:

I think may be it is because Safaricom does not have a fiber network of their own, so they have nothing to do down. They lease most of the capacity from Jamii Telcom, and some from KDN. So I guess the effect felt when KDN is down could be because many ISPs and Telcos lease capacity from them.

Sounds accurate. I don't think Airtel and Orange realise that the only hope they have of getting business from hardcore safaricom users lies in having a richer data offering. Voice is a done deal. Data is where the game is at now. On Thu, Jul 7, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

Additionally the Safaricom/Orange/Airtel modems are rather pervasive... I'm wondering where the game lies for ISP's (AK, Swift, MTN Business), given that they are slowly losing the corporate market to the larger telco's i.e. Safaricom/Orange http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Corporate+News/Safaricom+wins+contract+fo...
