Mobile thieves using mobile money transfer ...

A thief stole a mobile phone and called the owner's close relatives saying the owner had been involved in a road accident and was in critical condition. The hospital required money before admitting the patient so the thief was asking for 4,000 to be sent by M-PESA to the owner's mobile. The bigger question is, have people discovered loop holes to withdrawing money from mobile transfer solutions like M-PESA without the owner's ID document? I wonder how the thief could have withdrawn the money. O_O

You dont need an ID document via pesa point all need is the password of mpesa account of which, if he didnt have then was a dead end.and l think one should recover his money upon sim replacement since the mpesa account is not in his simcard.jst my opinion On 4/21/09, wesley kiriinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> wrote:

Pesa Point ATMs hardly ever ask for ID ...... :) but, question is how the thief got the legit owner's MPESA PIN. Did the thief hold the owner hostage and force it out of him or her? Seems likely, probably got the contacts to call the same way. These things happen, you know... BR, S -- "A democracy is a sheep and two wolves deciding on what to have for lunch. Maybe, the guy steals ur wallet (which has ur ID) and phone, walks to an agent and withdraws the money before SIM is reported stolen. ./Ok3ch On Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 4:28 PM, Steve Muchai <smuchai@gmail.com> wrote:

You don't need a PIN to withdraw money from an agent, thats why you can receive money and withdraw from an agent without being a registered on mpesa. PIN is only needed during withdrawals on ATM ./Ok3ch On Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 4:43 PM, Evans Ikua <ikua.evans@gmail.com> wrote:

Kweli wewe ni wa Zain!! ZAP works like that? LOL You need a PIN to withdraw money from M-Pesa. It's not like you walk there and ask for money:) You access the M-Pesa menu on the phone, do some magic and a message comes to the agent to give you money. Wait a moment.... you could be right there. For non-registered M-Pesa users, it could be as simple as you say. I have never quite thought about how they do the withdrawals, and neither have I even imagined that I can send PESA to a Zain number!! I therefore take this early opportunity to withdraw any deriding remarks I made on your comments. From experience if you are not registred all you need is your ID and the message confirming the transaction, with that you are set. Just go to any MPESA agent and get your money.

I have heard about blogs, but now there is this new buzz about Twitter. Anybody locally using twitter and finding it useful? I just registered and am following some chap called arsenal_mania and frankly speaking it is informative while being entertaining (addictive?). Which brings me to the question - are there instances of local "handles" that are worth following and are having an impact within our local socio-economic context? plse share. walu. btw: some guys i dont know are already "stalking me" on twitter ;-)

there are a couple of people on this mailing list on Twitter. Its a social application with focus on status updates. Recently there was a competition between Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears and CNN on who would get 1 million followers before the other. Ashton won. After twitter appeared on Oprah like a week ago, it got a number of hits. Currently there is a competition between capital fm and Easy fm to see who will get 100,000 twitter followers before the other. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/20/how-many-new-twitter-users-post-oprah-a... 2009/4/22 John Walubengo <jwalu@yahoo.com>

I have heard about blogs, but now there is this new buzz about Twitter. Anybody locally using twitter and finding it useful?
I just registered and am following some chap called arsenal_mania and frankly speaking it is informative while being entertaining (addictive?). Which brings me to the question - are there instances of local "handles" that are worth following and are having an impact within our local socio-economic context?
plse share.
walu. btw: some guys i dont know are already "stalking me" on twitter ;-)

hehehe, Wash, before I say whether I'll sue or not, lemmi talk this mail to me lawyers for advise!!! Or maybe we just settle for the beer :-)
Out of court settlement is a win-win situation :-)
You put yourself in this bad fix by admitting. You are now pleading for 'Ruaraka' mercy:) Basically, you handed Oketchukwu the upper hand he now commands over you. Whenever in disputatious circumstances never ever issue a voluntary written apology. Their lawyers use that as an admission of guilt on your part and the judge rules against you. I've even known several threatened with legal action unless they apologise and once they do, they still sue you thoroughly. An ISP tried this out on me in 2003/4 - even got their lawyer write me a letter demanding an apology, from whom, me? nop! :-)

Good point. Never admit liability even when it is more than obvious. You simply throw conscience away, like our politicians, and continue with life. Is there something really wrong with owning up?? To also go way off topic - was told of a story of this your lady driver who was told by her insurance never to admit liability. Well, she did cause one hell of an accident and refused to even talk to the victims since she could not admit liability - whatever happened to her you can guess - so I think, honesty counts when its necessary, but like Alex says, there are times when you can admit, but NOT on the dotted lines :-) @Wash, I thought you are the one who owes me the frothy fluids, now again its me, huh, ama you always put your money in the past and future and never in the present - 'Yesterday I was buying, where were you, nunua moja leo, and please, look for me tomorrow.' ./Ok3ch 2009/4/23 Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com>

IMHO, the question does not even arise since it's the "right thing" to do. However, if you do that in .ke you would be "mad-alone";) i.e. as per Sigmund Freud's definition of "madness is any behaviour, feeling or thinking that interferes with one's ability to work, get along with others or simply enjoy life." When one lives in mad society then they are forced to engage "like mad" to be "normal";) But be mad nicely;) thus don't lose sight of your ideals... cheers,

Okech, for every transaction you make including checking you balance you need to input you PIN.. if you store your PIN as a phone entry too bad for you..... you can as well hang the keys to your house at the gate... Patrick On Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 4:47 PM, Okechukwu <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:

The thief asked to be sent money via Mpesa because he is sure he knows the PIN, otherwise he wouldn't waste time asking for money he cant access. Considering he only asked for 4K, he didnt have a gun pointing at the owner. Guys with guns would have asked for the maximum mpesa can hold - 50K. Or the owner and the "thief" walipanga to fleece whoever they called to send money. it is a win win grand-coalition of sorts! 2K each! On 4/21/09, Odhiambo ワシントン <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

The bigger question is, have people discovered loop holes to withdrawing money from mobile transfer solutions like M-PESA without the owner's ID document? I wonder how the thief could have withdrawn the money.
Pesa Point ATMs hardly ever ask for ID ...... :) but, question is how the thief got the legit owner's MPESA PIN. Did the thief hold the owner hostage and force it out of him or her? Seems likely, probably got the contacts to call the same way.
These things happen, you know...

A number of M-Pesa Agents have been caught transacting without the verification of an ID card and have been shut down and their licence withdraw by safcon. On Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 4:06 PM, wesley kiriinya <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com>wrote:
A thief stole a mobile phone and called the owner's close relatives saying the owner had been involved in a road accident and was in critical condition. The hospital required money before admitting the patient so the thief was asking for 4,000 to be sent by M-PESA to the owner's mobile.
