I was angry about this but then I discovered that the BTS outside my building has the generator on most of the time. It uses fuel, we have no power most of the time. Fule costs more. Actually, everything these days costs more except the 10/- matatu's from Donholm to town. Something else, the government should be made aware that there is going to be massive massive inflation come December, right now I worry that my daughters diet at school has really deteriorated. I will not be calling as much as i've been doing. I hope some CCK people on the list are reading this. Add the blockade to unregistered numbers and handsets. The price of genuine handsets is going to go beyond the ability of ordinary Kenyans. Life ahead is going to be really hard for Kenyans, just like I predicted in 2007. Whoever was shocked at Bob's hint is being emotional rather than logical. The telecoms industry in Kenya is 99% imports, from the biggest equipment to the smallest, even a SIM card is imported. So if the the dollar wobbles, the network operators feel the effect in a very profound way. If everyone out there, even maize hawkers, are blaming the dollar for their upward price shifts, how is it that telcos are expected to remain with flat prices (or even lower them some more). It's simply not possible, prices have to go up at some point. On Sat, Sep 10, 2011 at 2:13 PM, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

Worse still, the increased inflation may lead (especially in the lower income circles) lead to reduced call rates (communicating now actively fighting for wallet share with food etc). A good indication of this on my end is the sudden increase in 'Please call me, Thank You' messages.... On Sat, Sep 10, 2011 at 9:14 PM, Kinuthia Ngugi <kinuthia.ngugi@gmail.com>wrote:

Me thinks it still is not justified. Why can't they bite humble pie and use some of its profits to cushion the common man? Out of the usual 16B profit they make, why can't they use 2B to cushion customers against raising the call rates? I thought the Govt still has a considerable shareholding in safcom? One can't expect to raise prices of everything whereas income/salaries remain constant something has got to give in at one point. @Jared The biggest problem is infrastructure support. Huwawei/Ericsson/ZTE/NSN etc, quote to Safaricom in USD. All managed services contracts are in USD. Basically, all a telco sources locally is labour and BTS infrastructure (i.e. mast's etc). Many corporations locally (e.g. Cisco resellers) quote in USD to shield themselves from fluctuation. Billing sytem, databases, software, PC's etc are all quoted to telco's in USD. Same thing with international bandwidth, quoted in USD. International roaming etc... When you think about it, there is very little that our local ecosystem provides telco's with other than revenue. Further to this if we were to say that the rates should remain static, we have inflation in Kenya. Even locally sourced products now cost more and employee salaries will need to rise in accordance to the same. The easiest thing to be done is to simply fix the economy, which is outside our domain as techies... :-( On Sun, Sep 11, 2011 at 10:53 AM, Jared Koyier <jaredkoyier@gmail.com>wrote:

Say you buy a database today from Oracle to run on Oracle Hardware, as an organization of Safaricom's size you need support - basically an SLA from Oracle on the Hardware and Software. Why an SLA? Because if said database is running your billing system and it goes down and you are unable to figure it out, well, you lose revenue. A lot of revenue. Normally support and subscription costs for hardware/software come to roughly 30% of the value spent on the hardware. Same thing with base stations, you have to get the manufacturer to support once the product has been sold. Similar model. All these costs are in USD. What happens when the dollar fluctuates - these costs spike because local telcos collects their revenue in KES, not USD. So it becomes more expensive to maintain the same infrastructure. Now - think about the guys who are probably most affected - Airtel. They were already on razor thin margins, outsourced infrastructure fully to NSN (I think), outsourced IT fully to IBM. Those are their largest expenses, suddenly going up... Customer spending is not accelerating at the same level.. Airtel has already been forced to increase call rates in India... http://www.telecomlead.com/inner-page-details.php?id=1736 On Mon, Sep 12, 2011 at 9:49 AM, Nish <pnishus@gmail.com> wrote:

@Wash - Safaricom buys all its core infrastructure from abroad, be it Cisco switching, Huawei, HP etc. Their support costs and managed service contracts are all quoted in USD. Their OPEX and short term capital expenditure have increased significantly. Because we all want dividends in 2012, the prices will go up. Ironically, the biggest losers will probably be Airtel. Given the slim margins they operate on and the heavy outsourcing model, their costs have gone up by over 10%. -kaboro- -----Original Message----- From: Alvin Jason Ochieng <ajochola@gmail.com> Sender: skunkworks-bounces@lists.my.co.ke Date: Fri, 9 Sep 2011 17:20:51 To: Skunkworks Mailing List<skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Reply-To: Skunkworks Mailing List <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Calling rates to go up?? _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://orion.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Rules http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 ------------ Other services @ http://my.co.ke

@Phares, This sort of makes sense to me now, but I do remember the prices went down because of certain factors influenced by CCK - like termination rates, etc. The OPEX has always been quoted in USD and anyway, Safaricom, Airtel can pay for these from their overseas operations - somehow, no? Sorry I am not quite able to reason in economic terminology. So is Safaricom intent on having the customers cushion them against the fluctuating KES the same way KPLC does in Fuel Cost Adjustments?? For a company making profits in the billions this is unacceptable. On Fri, Sep 9, 2011 at 6:11 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:
@Phares,
This sort of makes sense to me now, but I do remember the prices went down because of certain factors influenced by CCK - like termination rates, etc.

@Wash - Safaricom buys all its core infrastructure from abroad, be it Cisco switching, Huawei, HP etc. Their support costs and managed service contracts are all quoted in USD. Their OPEX and short term capital expenditure have increased significantly. Because we all want dividends in 2012, the prices will go up.
Ironically, the biggest losers will probably be Airtel. Given the slim margins they operate on and the heavy outsourcing model, their costs have gone up by over 10%. -kaboro-
