Windows more secure than OS and Linux

Considering Safari browser is not listed on the top vulnerable applications, I'd say the most secure platform is Safari on Windows Vista :) On Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 1:57 PM, Brian Ngure via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

It's simple the more popular the OS the more interest hackers have in it , plus think of it this way too , no one has been developing tools to protect linux or OSX (antivirus , system scan tools) , making it an open playing field . Hey!!! I was sitted just watching the thread and we (fanboys) get tossed in!!! Hehehe The underlying thing is always the multiuser environment in the core of UNIX systems which make them secure as a compromised user never affects the system and other users. Windows is inherently a single user environment although much has improved since Window NT generation. BTW, you using the system more nowadays doesn't make it the most secure, hehehe ./Ok3ch On Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 5:04 PM, Brian L via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

i think, it depends on your level of knowledge of OS systems. If you don't know much then go for windows, they have you covered in terms of security and all. I think this is why hackers are interested in windows, this is the only platform you can easily find targets. If you are good with OS then go for linux, you definitely need to peek under it to find out whats happening now and then and have to keep up with releases and apps that need to be tweaked further to work. Generally its for hands on people. However, you can be an OS guru and still use windows. Now you have redundancy, you and Microsoft. Security is multifaceted, it depends on many fronts among them: 1. How fast are vulnerabilities patched? 2. How easy is it for the user to patch the vulnerability? 3. How easy is it for the user to know about of the vulnerability? 4. among others Vendor 1 can only have 3 critical vulnerabilities in a 12-month period and take 1 year to patch them. Vendor 2 system can have 10 vulnerabilities in 12 month period and have users patch each of of them in 10 days. So which vendor is more secure? This generated some debate of Microsoft vs Google 90-Day Disclosure <http://www.infoworld.com/article/2867402/operating-systems/google-zero-day-disclosure-fuels-feud-with-microsoft.html> Kennedy On Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 5:45 PM, Stephen Munguti via skunkworks < skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> wrote:

I also think that no O.S is more secure than others in really significant ways. The reason Windows is hit more often than not is because it has a bulk of the users, especially those on desktops. Most of them are novices in computing but more importantly, if you are to look at them as a market, you get the most supply from that lot. At the least you can make most profits (credit cards numbers, machines to take over as zombies, email account / password pairs etc) from them. Linux and other open source systems in my opinion are more vulnerable security wise. The reason is that they are more open to audit, their flaws if present are fully exposed to the whole world for scrutiny and exploitation (Heartbleed, numerous 0-day holes in kernels, compilers, www servers etc). Suprisingly, UNIX systems were not designed with security in mind from the word go. The most important goal for its creators was to enable people share computing resources at the same time in Universities and Research labs. Those were highly trusted environments, security came as an afterthought (Read the section named "Deficient by Design" for more: http://homes.cs.washington.edu/~weise/preface.html A primary cause there is lesser malware in the world right now is that their authors (mostly rogue Russian and Chinese programmers) are now busy writing apps for Mobile devices, selling them at App stores for cash :) Martin. Recently, I met a senior manager whose institution has sworn off open source products after being hit several times. His reason being that open source technologies are the playgrounds for hackers. One mistake many institutions make is to miss out on updating/patching their systems. How many institutions still run on (unlicensed) Red Hat 5, for instance? As i pointed out before, if you are using open source products, your system admin needs to be very knowledgeable and aware of its downsides, new patches and the problems they purport to solve and whether they work or not. He should be able to detect anomalies and raise the issue with the community. This is because its the community that builds the OS, and their experience makes the OS better. Unfortunately if you don't have the necessary attitude and skills you cannot benefit from the community and vice versa, and therefore you might be vulnerable. As i said no more microsft support I use some free software products on windows, but before i install any, i reserch on it, if there is nothing on it i don't install it. Also I am in the habit of wire sharking traffic whenever i install any free software especially if it asks for firewall exclusions. You ignore that the high level of scrutiny in open source has directly resulted in a better quality product. It would be wrong to imply that secrecy makes a system more secure. -- keybase.io/kipyegonmark
