i think, it depends on your level of knowledge of OS systems. If you don't know much then go for windows, they have you covered in terms of security and all. I think this is why hackers are interested in windows, this is the only platform you can easily find targets. If you are good with OS then go for linux, you definitely need to peek under it to find out whats happening now and then and have to keep up with releases and apps that need to be tweaked further to work. Generally its for hands on people.

However, you can be an OS guru and still use windows. Now you have redundancy, you and Microsoft.
