I was born into the SEARCH ENGINE generation, I became a Script Kiddie......

Myself and many others who came before the search engine and the internet know fully well what we are talking about. Now we get labelled as "Trolls" but unfortunately the know it all could be blank quick-fix biashara generations. Meaning these closely resemble what LEGO did in the first place. The equivalent comparison is that of saying students should be allowed to use calculators and computers during examination time. The problem is not the use of technology advancements but whether the exam questions have become complex enough to warrant the use of calculator and computers, whether the evolvement has gotten to a point where the newer generations feel advantaged because of devices that the human mind can resolve in the first place. Some thoughts, and as usual IMHO & corrections welcome. :-) Rgds.

@aki I think you are stuck in the past and refusing to move on. why should I cram a thousand mundane facts when I can always google them? I bet you think kids in school should still use log tables for doing heavy multiplication. how does this benefit anyone? to date I have notseen anyone in the real world pull out log tables for a quick sum. have you? @Mark, The question is what is so different between say 1982 & 2012? Has the search engine and internet helped anyone change anything? Maybe it allowed you use existing projects to pass exams, but then what? Is it me who is stuck or is it you who is stuck? Rgds. On Tue, Mar 6, 2012 at 1:04 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

In my view, Increased access to information and viewpoints is beneficial to anyone seeking knowledge. Prior to finishing high school, the only information (that I had access to) regarding religion and morality stemmed from the church. Only when I started tinkering on the internet did I find out about the crusades, the inquisitions etc. Now this is not tech related but it shows that knowledge that is controlled by a select few conditions you to think in a particular manner. The difference between 1982 and 2012 is in access to info. A middle class kid had no way of accessing alternate explanations or different ways of proving say Fourier transform or see how Japanese kids live save for selected programmes on TV. Now all that is needed is an inexpensive modem. On Tue, Mar 6, 2012 at 2:12 PM, aki <aki275@gmail.com> wrote:

Aki, When I joined the lecturers referred me to internet to research. This is because the institution had few reference materials compared to the number of students sharing them. Later I realized that most of the lecturers have never worked in the corporate sector. This meant all the knowledge and expertise they have they read from books(This is why all practical set ups only dealt with basics. E.g. * * *Networking* In networking-We set up a 3 computer LAN yet we had a Computer Lab of over 50 computers. In N/w administration- Installed a Windows Server no server roles where configured. Infact Assignment two was to set up a domain using the server. The lecturer never made a follow up * * *In fact I learn't more from the Campus sys. admin while on work study than from the lectures(On networking and system administration). He gave me books, videos and tutorials. They set the basis right for me. Forever I am grateful for the time he spared for me and his inputs. Forever indebted.* * * *Programming* All course outlines covered the basic programming(Introduction, variables and strings, control structures, intro to object oriented programming). I expected they should go up to files and maybe network programming.)
From your rants I have noticed you expect a lot from people like me. I believe it is the duty of those who came before to invest in their juniors by passing the knowledge they have acquired.
Kindly do people like me credit, pass your knowledge and become immortal. *Only my views.*

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what Van Jacobson [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqGEMQveoqg ] would have to say if he was to join this thread? Any takers?? :) Martin.
