The Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Network is up and running and now available to as many people as can buy the Set-top-boxes at the outlets stated by Signet (Circa KBC Channel 2). I bought the STB at Vertex (Electronics Shop at the Corner of Ambassador Hotel) had them test it on the Tele's there and made a mad dash home to watch the Nigeria - Egypt match. The picture quality is still SD (Standard Definition) No HD as yet but good. For the first time I was able to watch all channels on Stereo. The EPG (Electronics Product Guide) is pretty rudimentary (Read Chinese) but function. The picture quality is superb given that the transmitter is in Limuru, and you can tell the next program each day by scrolling the EPG by date and channel. The only identified drawbacks are: - - A number of TV stations have not connected to the headend so you have to contend with NO CNBC Africa (shame), KissTV and Classic TV (if you watch them). - Most stations have not updated the Program Guide's so when the game was going on, was showing Now watching "Road To Success". - Some TV Stations are encoding on MPEG2 so the picture quality and sound sucks. Wont name which lest am labeled Draconian ;-) - Cost of the STB KES 7,700 (Costs 2000 more than a Linksys WRT Router). For critical mass the price needs to come down to less than KES 2,000. Radio stations will be also available though currently only 4 stations are connected. Next Project will be to get a PC, install Linux MCE and have a Home-brew PVR. Wondering how long it will take for us to get the juice down here in malindi (read-> end of the world) given that even KBC is streamed from DSTV -> once or twice especially after rainfall weve seen the signal lost and the rescan on TV. @Brian, As for coverage, there's a plan to roll out 40 additional transmitter sites, the particulars and tendering process for this is ongoing however it's envisaged that before the end of the year all these sites will be live am sure Malindi will be in there. The major determining factor is availability of connectivity Fiber or Microwave and protection for the same ... For locations without proper access KBC plans to go via satellite. What I admire most about the expansion plan is what the are calling local insertion. This is where you can have a station specific to an area say Mombasa (Baraka FM) , but will have the same countrywide coverage enjoyed by KBC or Citizen, nationwide coverage as a competitive advantage will be no more. I do agree with the insertion factor, means suddenly the whole of the country will be open to all the channels that are available in the "city". -> FYI, talking of the fiber, huku iko kwa wingi. Im assuming the HD factor will now purely be a station specific factor, quality will purely be an issue of how good the stream is, right? Current Channels are still SD (Standard Definition), however the Thomson Headend installed has capacity for at leave 5 HD channels the determining factor is the content, so yes it's station dependent. On Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 2:53 PM, [ Brainiac ] <arebacollins@gmail.com> wrote:

The only identified drawbacks are: -
- A number of TV stations have not connected to the headend so you have to contend with NO CNBC Africa (shame), KissTV and Classic TV (if you watch them).
- Most stations have not updated the Program Guide's so when the game was going on, was showing Now watching "Road To Success".
- Some TV Stations are encoding on MPEG2 so the picture quality and sound sucks. Wont name which lest am labeled Draconian ;-)
- Cost of the STB KES 7,700 (Costs 2000 more than a Linksys WRT Router). For critical mass the price needs to come down to less than KES 2,000.
Radio stations will be also available though currently only 4 stations are connected.
Next Project will be to get a PC, install Linux MCE and have a Home-brew PVR.

Unfortunately, there are no HDMI or SPDIF outputs (I can check again to confirm), adding these interfaces would increase the price on people who never use them. Here's what I recommend, feed RCA into an amp, denon, marantz, onkyo etc and then upscale the to HDMI interface. Most of these models do that with no problem. I an interesting development, I learned yesterday in a high-level meeting that KBC (Signet) will be pumping 2mb pipe bundled in to the DTT service. If executed this will have very interesting repercussions into the whole connectivity space, talk about disruption ;-) If you are looking at a PC connection, check out www.linuxmce.org. Kiania D. Daudi, Interesting point regarding the 2mb pipe. But remember, this is a broadcast medium, which means that any internet content would have to be 'pushed' at subscribers, unless there is a return path, which can make it interactive and thus push the whole deal into the realm of triple play/broadband... Using an RCA then upscaling to HDMI or component might not bring out the desired effect which is better quality (HD). In any case, for you to benefit from HD, the source and transmission will have to be HD.If not, then there won't be any difference between using HDMI or component and RCA. However, there are other compatible STBs(DVB-T and MPEG4 standards) that have such outputs. ./bernard On Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 11:55 AM, Brian Munyao Longwe <blongwe@gmail.com>wrote:

Upscaling is the best you can do right now, the picture quality is still SD. I guess this means HDMI inputs or not wont matter. I also got the impression that there'll be different STB models available in the market, not to mention HD content at a later date. However, there are other compatible STBs(DVB-T and MPEG4 standards) that have such outputs. ./bernard

Daudi,
Interesting point regarding the 2mb pipe. But remember, this is a broadcast medium, which means that any internet content would have to be 'pushed' at subscribers, unless there is a return path, which can make it interactive and thus push the whole deal into the realm of triple play/broadband...
I'm loving this!

I an interesting development, I learned yesterday in a high-level meeting that KBC (Signet) will be pumping 2mb pipe bundled in to the DTT service. If executed this will have very interesting repercussions into the whole connectivity space, talk about disruption ;-)

dstv is stereo by default but capable of 5.1 surround through spdif, though i guess the local channels on dstv are in mono(not sure). what disappoints me about the dstv decoders is lack of component outputs. Hi David, Any chance you could provide a listing of which channels are available? On Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 12:29 PM, David Kiania | Asentric Consulting Ltd <kianiadee@gmail.com> wrote:

@Kevin, All channels are available save for Kiss Classic, Oxygen & CNBC. Christian channels are Family, God Channel and another one called Gospel something .... They say it's a matter of time before these and others come on board, would it be too audacious to envision a Skunk channel .. Tech TV kind of thing? MMhhhhh 8~) 8~) 8~) Forgive my ignorance in this subject. Does this mean I can get rid of my antenna once I install the box? Apart from CNBC, KissTV and ClassicTV, are all other local channels are on digital? It's indeed a shame CNBC is not on. I too need to know the answer to that:) @Kiania - you being in the mainstream of this New Technology, could you please be specific on the model/type of the STB and why you recommend that particular one? You can help us in making the right decision the first time. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

I used my existing antenna provided is supports UHF, normally the Ellies type works very well. However the STB comes with it's own small antenna, which they disclaim is not adequate for areas far from Limuru (The transmission site). As for the model, any Set Top Box that supports MPEG4 compression would do however, I insisted on getting the Star Media one because they did the KBC deployment and comes with a slot for the smart card. KBC are running a conditional access system from Connax which will be used for Pay-TV. The belief is that once activated you can purchase the smart cards from any outlet and will plug-in with no problem. I would still recommend going for the Star Media STB, the prices will definitely come down, but I believe this is the price early adopters bear.
