Re: [Skunkworks] Mobile Internet-Getting the best of all worlds.

@Alex, Frankline, ... Thanks a lot. I have Ubuntu 8.04. I gave up on using the USB dongles, however that knowledge might come in handy. I connect through my mobile phone. Is there a way to use that in Ubuntu? Phone model is Nokia N81. Just an update with my YU experience: So far so good. Seems like I spend about 60 bob a full day connected to net, surfing pages, chatting and downloading a couple of files around 5 MB. $afcom was around 150. Haven't got the Orange yet, but will do soon. 8~) --- On Thu, 7/9/09, Job Njogu <jnjogu@gmail.com> wrote: From: Job Njogu <jnjogu@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Mobile Internet-Getting the best of all worlds. Hi Wesley Did you manage to connect with your phone? Just wantd to share some knowledge. Conect your phone to the computer and wait for it to be recognized (use lsusb command to check) If it is not recognized as a modem, use modprobe usbserial, disconnect then connect again This time it should be recognized as a modem run wvdialconf as administrator (sudo wvdialconf). THis will set up default configs for net. However, they may not be valid for safcon/etc so, edit your /etc/wvdial.conf file with the right settings. I may have to give these to you later or google "safaricom on ubuntu" It should give you some configs to use Run wvdial On Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 8:45 AM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

hi guys, Huaweii with safcom and zain on ubuntu worked flawlessly, what i had a problem with was 8.04 with the flip flop thing from orange. so here is my question: 1: Can i just make it a modem and not a flip flop? 2: Does anyone have a dumb guide to setting up this thing on ubuntu, pl remember that when im logged into ubuntu, i have no net, so sudo apt-get does not work at least till the tihing works. All downloads have to be done on an XP and then a reboot to ubuntu to test them. Many thanks. On 7/16/09, Frankline Chitwa <frank.chitwa@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi Wesley Did you manage to connect with your phone? Just wantd to share some knowledge. Conect your phone to the computer and wait for it to be recognized (use lsusb command to check) If it is not recognized as a modem, use modprobe usbserial, disconnect then connect again This time it should be recognized as a modem run wvdialconf as administrator (sudo wvdialconf). THis will set up default configs for net. However, they may not be valid for safcon/etc so, edit your /etc/wvdial.conf file with the right settings. I may have to give these to you later or google "safaricom on ubuntu" It should give you some configs to use Run wvdial

most Linux machines will plug-and-play for your phone. In Fedora 11, using a Motorola L7i, i just had to add it on the GSM network connections and I was set. this works for networks like Yu which don't need any further configuration on a computer.

@Alex, Frankline, ...
Thanks a lot. I have Ubuntu 8.04. I gave up on using the USB dongles, however that knowledge might come in handy. I connect through my mobile phone. Is there a way to use that in Ubuntu? Phone model is Nokia N81.
Just an update with my YU experience:
So far so good. Seems like I spend about 60 bob a full day connected to net, surfing pages, chatting and downloading a couple of files around 5 MB. $afcom was around 150. Haven't got the Orange yet, but will do soon.

Try https://forge.betavine.net/projects/vodafonemobilec. works like the mobile connect/partner found on windows.

@Wesley Sorry for taking such a long time to answer. Remember the modem is Huawei, not safaricom. Therefore it is a universal USB dongle. Ubuntu 8.1 and > connect without any special configuration (they have safcom and zain configs). Ubuntu 8.04 is not auto but easy to configure although on some machines it may be hectic.

You will find 'drivers' dependency culture absent on Linux:-) just type 'wvdial' at terminal or 'sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp' for fancier blinking two-connected computers icons...
On an earlier thread I mentioned (on upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04) forced to boot from an older kernel to successfully run " modprobe usbserial vendor=(HEX) product=(HEX) ('HEX' representing wireless usb device's vendor and product hexadecimals).
I found a solution on how to load usb device through new 'submodules' way here: <https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/65281> (Philip Muskovac said on 2009-04-02:)
Please that note: ----- kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=UUID=f2441938-7359-49d7-95eb-81f36a166757 ro quiet splash usbserial.vendor=(HEX) usbserial.product=(HEX) ---------
is all on one line... (nearly pinched myself when I realised that I had them on separate lines and thus did not work:)
That said, you realise mobicos are supplying Windows drivers (firmware) pre-loaded on the devices usb themselves. When plug it in computer reads device as 'mass storage' media.
oh no! but not to worry! Have not tried it yet ( time..) but this should work....
<http://forum.linux.or.id/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=19108> oops! dunno those guys language?
Wesley, any helpful?
cheers,
