OT : Computer Society of Kenya

Am considering joining, and was wondering if anyone from this list is a member and could share some insights. What kind of society is it? What does it do? Is it active in kenyan scenes especially in the tech sector? What initiatives did it have for 2009? Rgds -- ( the rise of Yoda! Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi... )

Why would you want to join a society whose objects you dont know. Isn't that putting the horse before the cart? On 12/16/09, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@Grace, from the CSK website, its confusing what they do. I'd really dislike to join any society that is deeply embedded in a chai and mandazi culture. But am seriously considering, though I'd like to know more. Activites, initiatives for 2009. What did they do in the tech sector? Asante sana.

@Grace -- putting the horse before the cart I believe is the recommended practice. But you raise some good questions. I believe the top dog of that body is a member of this list. Perhaps he can elaborate On Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 8:09 AM, Grace Bomu <nmutungu@gmail.com> wrote:

Very funny. And definitely OT. Matters related to IT are serious indeed, jokes have no place on this august list. Well-formed <somberness /> is what the DTDs dictate. Saidi On Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 3:14 AM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

@Saich, ok so its good for networking, job placements and for people in ICT to mingle, discuss biashara . Thats is an objective well served. The very essence of a sociey platform is much more beyond that. So am going to ask more questions ( in blue below ), which to me seem confusing from the CSK website, especially as a prospective member : - *About the Society : Vision:* To be a world-class association representing ICT industry and ICT Profession. *Mission:* The Computer Society of Kenya has been serving the individual IT Professionals, Corporate IT members, Corporate IT users, and IT Accredited Training Members since 1986, providing an industry identity and forum, leading in public policy advocacy, offering technology and management training services, and running a recognition and awards program. *If any CSK member is on the list, please list Vision and Mission objectives realised for 2009. Include in these actvities and initiatives proposed and implemented in 2009. **Under the Events category, there is just one event planned?* ** - On the Home Page there are ICT excellence awards. Hon Mudavadi was did the launch. *There is no list of those who achieved the excellence awards! What is the criteria of these awards, selection process and the tag " voted blah bla of the year blah - computer society of kenya "? * I have a feeling this thread is going to archives sooner than I think. ** ** **

I seem to remember a flame-fest a while back among a number of IT societies on the KICTanet mailing-list. I suspect the silence you're hearing right now is because any response to your questions from the societies might re-ignite a slug-fest. A question: why don't you fly solo for a while? Get some usable code up and running, create a prototype and you may get a number of coders very willing to join you. Think of it this way: what would your chances of funding be if you approached potential investors without a prototype? Asking people to join an initiative is just like asking for an investment, that's what this list has taught me. Without any code, I am highly unlikely to get anyone to join me on anything. Having code doesn't guarantee anything, but at least it's a good starting point. My take-home message? Fly solo for a while with an aim of creating a prototype to attract like minds. @Saidi, thnks for the adv. I'm still studying on the code part so not an issue for me, however along the way there are the usual questions. I came across the CSK site and wanted to know more and also see the worth of joining up, but thought to share the questions on the list. It may help others too and open horizons on the intensity of the ICT sector. :-)

computer society of kenya isnt that dated and a bit stuffy like mothaiga country club. I am thinking back to the days when computers we computers we used to cover comps with dustcovers and remove our shoes when entering the complab. Then hardware was king now cloudware is the pretender to the throne These days what if i may ask is a computer? An iphone a digital telly a car with a gps map.
