Received below email, There is no mention of infrastructure, all I see mentioned is "Modem with HSPA" If one is to use a Mobile Network modem, which needs simcards, even if the software works to create an Internet tunnel, all this "unlimited data" will have to pass through someone's infrastructure, and you will be charged for it.. Maybe I have not understood this "offer" Sent from some iPad Begin forwarded message:

I fell off my seat laughing at the point where they offer a Gigabit for Ksh. 1,500

Do you think such a service is valid? On Mon, Dec 31, 2012 at 2:50 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Technically, yes it's possible to get the "unrestricted access to internet". Realistically, looking at the "speeds" in question, those guys are simply over-pitching their product. For a good part of this year, I had the opportunity to tinker with a similar product from http://www.wi-free.com. That was before they stopped selling their vouchers directly to users and most importantly, before they revamped their website & going full throttle into VPN business ;) The idea back then was very simple : making use of some commonly open ports on any Telecomm Opco who would allow you to latch onto their data network regardless of your account balance. Some light-weight software running on your local PC would then make use of any open DNS, ICMP, TCP or UDP ports on the Opco's network to talk to the wi-free servers that in turn got you onto the internet. Speeds were as erratic as they came, depending on the protocol and the physical location of the proxy servers. On a good day, I'd manage to stream a few random videos (especially KTN livecasts) reasonably well while torrenting in the back-ground. Too bad I never bothered to benchmark the erratic speeds. Gauging from the online fora at the time, the wi-free service was more of a hit in Uganda and Indonesia than in Kenya.

Hi Tony, So basically this product utilizes a loophole in the mobile networks, or does it use normal latched connection with 0 balance, but bypasses the operators dns, and goes straight to public dns eg 8.8.8.8 ? BR/ Stephen N.

I hope the old wi-free product refers since I'm not privy to how the 'Kenya Digital Alliance' product works. As an intelligent guess, I'd say your theory of bypassing the operator's DNS applies. The reason I say so is that some operators in UG (Notably MTN) kept on changing the targeted ports just to ward off the pesky wi-free users. This in my view just points to some necessary evil of maintaining those ports open for some good reason. I don't see any glaring loop-hole in that. It wouldn't have mattered if you had any balance on your account or not. The per-requisite was that you had a sustained connection to the operators data network. Locally, some of the operators only allow you to connect to their data network when your account balance is above some thresh-hold value. As the stingy part of me would have it, I preferred to ride on the operator who allowed me to latch onto their data network sans checking my account balance beforehand :) My emphasis on the zero balance angle is meant to point out that the OpCo on whose infrastructure you were riding had nothing in it for them.

Just to add onto my earlier post... The wi-free service would work over most data networks.... wifi hotspots, mobile data networks et al. There was some brief explanation of how the service works on their old webpage... I haven't dug out any archives/cached pages for that. This page <http://freenetug.blogspot.com/p/how-to-connect.html> coupled with the attached screen-shots of the old application will probably offer some sneak preview on what was involved.

I was looking for the catch, and found that you have to pay about Ksh. 1000 to get a voucher code; The problem would be after you "ftp" that cash and the port ranges are blocked or service doesnt work. *1 How do I activate my wi-free account or become premium?* You must buy a voucher code from the wifree site or Me Ofumbi Stephen

Check out this guys blog. I believe he is doing precisely what Tony is talking about. http://lukekit.blogspot.com/ On Tue, Jan 1, 2013 at 11:27 AM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

So does this mean, that if you set up a proxy server seomwhere, and set up a proxy client at home using some open port, you will be in a position to surf without paying these jamaas?

But then your Proxy server will need to be connected to the internet (which is paid for)...no? What you describe is commonly used to bypass site restrictions, say at work-places, by opting to use your unrestricted set up, say at home through the use of a VPN proxy.

Well, the proxy server might use a cheaper fixed connection compared to a restricted Wireless one?

Was wondering the same. To get to those proxies you need to have internet connection, paid for. Even if they charge 1500 unlimited, it still has to be routed through the provider (safcom, airtel, etc) and for these you have to pay. Maybe I am not getting it :( On Tue, Jan 1, 2013 at 4:36 PM, Tony Likhanga <tlikhanga@gmail.com> wrote:
