Re: [Skunkworks] Moving an XP harddisk

Hi list, Please Help. I removed a 40g hdd(IDE) from a machine that had a busted motherboard. Now my problem is the 40G hdd had XP installed on it and i want to add it to another comp that has 160G hdd(SATA) with XP also.I have googled and i aint getting the info i want. The computer restarts over and over again when the 2 hdds are installed. Which is the best way to make them work together since the 40g hdd has important data i need to retrieve. NB: am sure the 40g hdd is working fine.

Try disabling SATA mode in your laptop's BIOS 2009/11/16 nerdalf james <nerdalf@gmail.com>

Isn't it as simple as making the 40GB disk the slave disk?? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@Simon it is a desktop computer. @Wash its not that simple since the comp doesnt boot when both hdds are installed.I have made the 40g the slave by using the jumper still no luck.

Does it boot with the 40GB disk alone then? I find that a bit odd for a Desktop. Perhaps you can make the 40GB master, boot into safe mode, copy the data over to the larger disk? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

@Nerdalf, to save on time, suggest that you get a USB to IDE convertor. Usually these cards can be found inside those units offering Ext HDD casings. Have you tried to use the CDROM drive cable too as this is usually sec and retain boot to primary 160GB?

@wash the 40g does not boot alone since the motherboard has change (error:nksr miss dont know what this is )so the only way that can work is by repairing the windows installation via cd on this hdd i want this to be the last solution i try, looking for a simpler and faster way. @ aki i dont want to buy an additional hardware since its a once off thing. would deleting the windows folder on C:/ of the 40g work by booting from cd so as it can be detected as an additional hdd am afraid of losing the data?? You mentioned you just wanted to get some data from that hard disk, why not connect both hard disks then boot from a live cd and do the copying from there? On Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 4:12 PM, nerdalf james <nerdalf@gmail.com> wrote:

For sure! Something like UBCD.

First, assuming the jumper settings are ok, u should see both hdds in the BIOS. Verify this is true. If both are OK, boot with the 160gb if it has an OS for this MB. You are right, the 40gb may not boot on this mb since the architecture has changed. You do know how to select the boot up disk (pressing F2, F8, F10, F12) etc depending on your system. If the 160 has no bootable OS, go the LiveCD was, as Peter advices hereabove. Concerning whether you should delete Windows folder, you DONT have to: Run the bootable XP CD as if you were installing Windows anew. Windows will detect an existing OS and ask you if you want to repair. Select the repair option and wait (30-50 mins, or more). This option looks like a clean install but it is very good in that the OS will be installed with this MB in the picture, you keep your data and programs, and settings and there is always an improvement in performance as well On Mon, Nov 16, 2009 at 4:23 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:
