Is this for real David? Was about to buy the Huawei's VF845 but stilll I need to look at its features closely e.g. whether it support exchange mails and mobile Skype. I guess I need to hold on a bit. Thanks On Mon, Sep 6, 2010 at 3:58 PM, David Njuki <njukey@gmail.com> wrote:

Would also be willing to test this as it hits the low market...apparently 90% of china phones has issues with internet connectivity...and with Huawei being the major player in modems we use for broadband i think we have something to smile about also thanks to the Android.....we can now enjoy cheaper smartphones...... Whats your take guys...........

Speaking of which. I have the VF845 and am unable to use it to connect to the net using a Linux machine (much like how we use a dongle). Tried usb_modeswitch with no success. Any early adopter with a solution ?

Android phones support - tethering - which allows you to broadcast your 3g connection via wifi - creating a "mobile hotstpot" to which you can add your other devices. If the app/feature is not available on your model - look for an application called "Barnacle" Regards, Brian On Mon, Sep 6, 2010 at 4:28 PM, Ndungi Kyalo <ndungi@gmail.com> wrote:

Mblayo, Device is effectively rooted and r00ter is having loads of fun with it. Barnacle works right out of the box. Am even able to ssh into my laptop using an android SSH app! usb modswitching on linux also worked, but this one took a bit of a procedure (for the vodafone 845 and huawei relatives) : 1. Install usb_modeswitch (via apt-get install) , and add the following line to your */etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules*: == ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1031", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'" == 2. You also create a file named "12d1:1031" inside */etc/usb_modeswitch.d/*, containing: == # Huawei U8230 DefaultVendor= 0x12d1 DefaultProduct=0x1031 TargetVendor= 0x12d1 TargetProductList="1035" CheckSuccess=20 MessageContent="5553424370ab71890600000080010a11060000000000000000000000000000" == 3. restart udev for the rules to take effect /etc/init.d/udev restart 4. Thats it, you can now unplug and plug your huawei (aka vodafone 845) and it will be recognised as a 3g GSM modem. 5. If you need to access your memory card, simply mount usb storage from your android phone's notification area at the top, linux will switch the device from modem to storage. 6. GSM modem device is /dev/ttyUSB0 (am on debian) If you need to root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741643&page=1 Android rooting is what the youth today call `mambo baddd` ! -- Ndungi Kyalo On 6 September 2010 14:04, Brian Munyao Longwe <blongwe@gmail.com> wrote:

Mblayo,
Device is effectively rooted and r00ter is having loads of fun with it. Barnacle works right out of the box. Am even able to ssh into my laptop using an android SSH app!
usb modswitching on linux also worked, but this one took a bit of a procedure (for the vodafone 845 and huawei relatives) :
1. Install usb_modeswitch (via apt-get install) , and add the following line to your */etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules*:
== ATTRS{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1031", RUN+="usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'" ==
2. You also create a file named "12d1:1031" inside * /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/*, containing:
== # Huawei U8230
DefaultVendor= 0x12d1 DefaultProduct=0x1031
TargetVendor= 0x12d1 TargetProductList="1035"
CheckSuccess=20
MessageContent="5553424370ab71890600000080010a11060000000000000000000000000000" ==
3. restart udev for the rules to take effect /etc/init.d/udev restart
4. Thats it, you can now unplug and plug your huawei (aka vodafone 845) and it will be recognised as a 3g GSM modem.
5. If you need to access your memory card, simply mount usb storage from your android phone's notification area at the top, linux will switch the device from modem to storage.
6. GSM modem device is /dev/ttyUSB0 (am on debian)
If you need to root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741643&page=1
Android rooting is what the youth today call `mambo baddd` !

Curiously though, it costs a lot less, even with capacitive touch screen!

Possibly a factor of release date - early-adopters usually get bitten on issues such as features/bugs - ask me I'm a chronic case! LoL!!! Mblayo On Mon, Sep 6, 2010 at 4:58 PM, Ndungi Kyalo <ndungi@gmail.com> wrote:

Jac, With an OS like android your only concerns should be whether an app which supports exchange mails and skype exists out there.. and chances are that it does exist among the 70000 or so apps on the android market place. On 6 September 2010 13:13, Jac <jack.gathoni@gmail.com> wrote:
