How to create a fallback internet connection

Hi, anyone know how to create a fallback internet connection? I have two internet connections, Zuku broadband (*Main*) and Safaricom broadband (*Alternate*), I usually connect my Safaricom broadband to the router and disconect the Zuku one when Zuku goes down since its my main connection problem is: users have to change their Gateway when I do this by disconnecting their connections and reconnecting them again. I have been toying with the idea of setting up a server using smoothwall so that when I need to make this change all I do is change the gateway on the server and the clients will not have to mess/change their internet connection settings. Any assistance will be highly appreciated. Try out ClearOS http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html it has a feature called Multi-Wan that allows you to pool multiple internet connections so you have one gateway. On Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 11:46 AM, Kibui Maina <mainakibui@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Kibui (Kefue?) It's your router that is either primitive/rudimentary or not properly configured. Perhaps you can get a descendant of Linksys RV082 (or any other dual WAN capable router) and that will solve your problem. I am talking of those because they are cheaper than getting an Cisco capable of doing such. You can of course use Smoothwall (I've never used it) or the FreeBSD-based pfSense <http://www.pfsense.org/> to achieve the desired result. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Hi, all Thanks for the replies, I installed Smoothwal <http://www.smoothwall.org/>l a free firewall software on an old desktop, this works like magic, it allows me to block sites that I do not want people to see, ports I dont want people to use, view incoming and outgoing traffic via its web interface and most of all it acts as my DNS server so when one ISP fails I just change the cable for incoming traffic from one ISP to the other at my incoming traffic network port and everything continues as normal. With PfSense, you could have two network interfaces - one for Zuku and the other for Safaricom - and it will do all these for you automagically! You need automatic failover. It does it! Did you try it before settling for Smoothwall?

Really awesome product right there. Dint get to try it b4 Smoothwall but they do pretty much the same thing. Nxt time Im deploying a similar network ill try it, or maybe when I free up one of my machines :) Kibui Kenneth Maina, BSC Computer Science. *Tools I Use:* Joomla, PHP, MYSQL, Learning Python, Amazon cloud hosting, Cpanel, Adobe CS4, Dreamweaver, Cent OS, Linux, Windows, Networking, Hardware, VM Ware. * * *Tel:* +254 (0) 721 173 780 *Blog:* Opticom Solutions <http://opticomsolutions.blogspot.com/> *Website 1*: kit-b.com <http://www.kit-b.com> On Sat, Jun 11, 2011 at 10:50 AM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:
