Let MJ tell us! If Carol came to Africa and saw the need to develop Obopay, then she must have come to Kenya and saw what M-Pesa was doing and perfected on it. Her's is quiet better than M-Pesa since she has linked up with Master Card, something that we lack here. Generally, this could be copycat -- Solomon Mburu P.O. Can anyone really patent the idea of mobile payments/wallets? The algorithms used, maybe but not the idea. If you continue reading you'll see obopay was launched in 2005. Safaricom OTH launched mpesa in march 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-Pesa) so i doubt obopay copied them. As to the question of who copied whom (generally speaking) - does it really matter, so long as you can pick up an idea extend it to something better? I mean if today I could come up with a similar payment solution but that works better than mpesa should i not do it just because safaricom did it first? -Billy 2009/11/12 Solomon Mburu Kamau <solo.mburu@gmail.com>

And what is wrong with doing that if there was no patent. Clearly we have no inventors/innovators in Kenya(or laws to protect them?). No wonder Patent Knowledge(and a respect for intellectual capital) doesn't resonate with us . I remember a thread where people are afraid of sharing info especially with big companies because they will run with it. If patenting was respected, such fears would be quelled coz the first to patent would get the benefit of his ideas. On Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 2:05 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Joram, mobile phone payment platforms were conceptualized and implemented long before MPesa, so the issue of patents for MPesa cannot arise On Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 2:42 PM, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com>wrote:

What then is Patentable?(if that word exists) I recall a lawsuit between RIM (blackberry makers) and some random guys who patented mobile email technology and sat on it. They received hefty payments Nokia is suing Apple for using patented technology on their Iphone... Help me understand On Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 2:43 PM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

@Joram, seriously! na Zap... believe me if Vodacom suspected patent infringements. they wouldn't need you to point that out

patents!.. patents.... I wonder how you can patent numbers or transactions, this is all about. addition, division, subtraction, multiplication this is the core logic in mpesa so you can have your own mobile money and call it M-CASH, you can patent M-CASH and the logo but the logic I still wonder how. By the way who came first the egg or the chicken av a look at this www.tagattitude.fr/en<http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=BbGNkCVoBS7nmBMTh-AbO_KDyAemWxh3Rr5ORB8CNtwGA8QQQARgBIIaPgAIoCTgAUJDR0M0BYMMGoAHTjcn6A7IBD21haWwuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbboBCGdtYWlsLWN2yAEB2gEnaHR0cDovL21haWwuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS9VUjFISFhsYUlFODFkNUFzgAIBqQIeVqlx1xi5PsgC3_ndDKgDAegD1ALoAxPoA8cE9QMCAACE&num=1&sig=AGiWqtxLJEI3tjk6lqsNpBbsj7pjhnlTXA&adurl=http://www.tagattitude.fr/en> On Thu, Nov 12, 2009 at 1:15 PM, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com>wrote:
