utp cable for Power Over Ethernet for nanostation

Hi anyone who could help out here, Am having issues issues powering a nanostation2. The cable is about 30 meters long (cat5e) but I don't get a connection on the lan side of the POE. If I use a shorter cable it work ok. Just to make sure the cable (30mtrs) works i can use it between a switch and my laptop. Question: Could the utp cable quality which is low so it has high resistance? How can I solve this issue? Could using a cat6 cable help?

Hi, You might need to re-terminate this cable. It might be working for data but not necessarily for the PoE which should be using the free pairs that data doesn't use. Hi,
You might need to re-terminate this cable…

*Hi. The the cable is working with the nanostation but the power led is weak compared to when i use a shorter cable plus I have a cable tester and its well crimped. I still cant get what is wrong but I think its the cable with high resistance so I want to here other possible causes.*

@Job, there are only 2 causes : a) On the pairs that you are using power over, the copper in the cable is too impure and is causing in-line resistance. That means check you power supply unit, it must be heating up quite a lot. b) The power adaptor is supplying current in milliamps eg 100mA, 200mA and is only rated for patch cable lengths. Fix to a) : Get a high quality cable Fix to b) : Get a higher Milliamps adapter, preferably 1000mA or 1 Amp. HTHs.

I had a related problem before, just ensure you have a quality cable and ensure the termination is done right, a quick check on your crimp tool might confirm that all points are okay. On Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 6:34 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Well Aki i think you could be correct on the cable quality. Well the adaptor is rated ot 0.8 A (800mA) . @Moses which cable would you recommend i get to power it up at 40 metres away?

@Job try Siemon, Krone or Belden or check with Adwest for these cables. Or better, talk to Wimax techies and see if you can get the Outdoor Cat5e cable. This cable is too good, usually ships with Wimax units. HTHs.

I got a cat6 F/utp it is working great. Thanks. On 11/11/09, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:
