Evening, I would like to consult you guys on the best STB to buy that has: 1. No monthly premiums 2.A wide variety of good channels 3.Good signal quality( I saw someone on the list complain about StarTimes or something)
From the little I was able to gather from the discussion a few weeks back was that there is PANG, SIGNET(by KBC) and ADN...
Asante Sana.

My Personal Opinion. Have been using Crystal STB before switch off and have no problems with it. However its like they are no longer available in the market. I wish i could get my hands on a few of them.

I highly recommend Bamba Tv <http://www.bambakenya.co.ke/> decoder : *Pros* - They have some their own exclusive content over and above the regular FTA channels available on all other decoders. For the time being, this content is also accessible through other decoders, but expect it to get locked onto the Bamba Tv decoder in due course. - They are the only "terrestrial" provider I know of who offer HD content. - They have a decent web presence where meaningful info is posted, not just the usual social media marketing stuff common with competition. *Cons* - They recently pushed an update that screwed up the channel clarity (presumably while tweaking HD channels). I'm not sure if this has since been fixed, but I'd give them the benefit of doubt. - You'll have to contend with the adverts that pop up when you transition between channels. Who knows where else they'll sneak these into? - There's a risk of losing the exclusive content should they fall out with their partners - Virgin Media Limited <http://www.bambakenya.co.ke/end-user-license-agreement/> That said, I use a Hbox decoder that just works. I can lend it to you for a brief test run if you are interested :-) Tony.

@Tony A quick Google search and I found that Hbox decoder is pretty awesome. Especially the usb record capability. On the other hand Bamba Tv seems good too although they do not mention their STB features(e.g usb support or HDMI output etc). Lastly, I read about their 50+ channels being a gimmick as they have several channels repeating themselves. More on that from Techweez <http://www.techweez.com/2015/01/16/bamba-tv-channels/> . BambaTV decoder has PVR capability too... I'll try check if the quality matches that of HBOX (Full HD recording). About the channel count, all open STBs will exhibit that repetition. Bamba is expected to come tops when they later lock in their exclusive content to their STBs. PS : I'm yet to see an FTA STB with a decent menu interface & ergonomically acceptable remote control unit. Tony.

I forgot to mention that HDMI support is present on BambaTV STB as well. Tony.

The below Android STB will offer you more than you require, all BambaTV channels as well. Good day folks, I feel compelled to weigh in on this discussion. The are 2 kinds of people out there in my view. Those that want a way to continue watching tv post migration and those who want more. ie are willing to pay for content. Either way the below should be taken into consideration. 1. Content is King The only reason why we want to watch something is because we like it. Some will be willing to pay for it. 2. Coverage/Distribution is queen. GOTV, (just launched in Garissa and Narok) PANG, Signet have the best coverage so far in that order. Bamba only recently launched at the coast from media reports. ADN is only in Nairobi for the time being. Thjere are some areas that are only covered by Satelite so you will be looking at Satelite Tv. (DStv/Zuku/StarSat/Azam). 3. Best of both worlds GOtv and I believe Startimes have the best of both worlds. Their boxes can operate in FTA or paytv mode. (Usually after paying a fee to cover for subsidies. For GOTV = 1200/-, ST=2500). Once the subsidy is paid, the box becomes an FTA box and enable you to watch anything out there that's free at NO monthly cost. The good thing with this is that you can always jump back to the paytv option when your economic situation allows. eg. when your girl is coming over or the kids are on holiday :) Also GOtv is running a promo starting today and they have just dropped their prices to 1,399/- with 2 months subscription. After the 2 months, you can pay the 1,200/- subsidy and convert the box or pay a monthly subscription. 3. Choice of Box: As I read earlier, some people would prefer to go with certain boxes because of certain fancy characteristics. But in the end, the boxes are just receivers. They will likely receive anything out there that's FTA in addition to encrypted content if you will be willing to pay for it. The question is; whose box do you choose and my simple answer is; the one with the content you want to watch. There has been lots of confusion about digital migration but I believe we are beginning to be more informed. My 50 cents.
