Happy new year skunks... generally speaking, how do these models compare in terms of service costs, endurance, parts and resale value in the Kenyan market. How hard is it to get on your feet if you say, burn the clutch in Merti, or burst your gasket in doldol...

A Belated HNY-2011... :-) @Collins, any good off-roader will tell you preparation and pre-checks lists before a trip too important to avoid major problems. My personal favourite is Patrol but resale value goes to Toyota. However, also don't forget the Landrover 110 series and if you can get an ex-british army one, you will not go wrong on parts and endurance. u could also consider a Mitsu pajero...the older diesel types...2.8 litre turbo charged....the manual types are quite handy...if u look around on the roads, u will they quite a number of them...they are affordable to buy and maintain...\Landcruiser is the best though for the same amount u will get a newer and less mileage pajero... out of curiosity.....what bush trips are you planning? Someone mentioned the Toyota Hilux, i second, that is a true off-road car. Once went past Maua toward Kiina during the rainy season in a Toyota Hilux Old model [with 2 axles and Leaf springs]. Took down that muddy black cotton soil terrain like a hot knife through butter. A Toyota engineer of then would have been proud. Only 3 cars rule that territory Landrover 110, Toyota LandCruiser [Not VX] and Toyota Hilux. There rest of the cars are called 'taxis' by the locals. From experience, Toyota Hilux Surf should be avoided for economical reasons for the petrol version. I had a 2.7L Petrol and it consumes more gas than my current 3.5L Pajero petrol engine, and I wasn't the only one complaining, all my car-buddies are still all stressed up about the Hilux Surf consumption.

Collins, Landcruiser. Or Landrover. Or RangeRover Classic (pre-1980 to mid 80's) Even a 1970's LandRover 88 will survive just about anywhere. (I have no experience with Patrols, so can't say about them) On Sun, Jan 2, 2011 at 12:31 AM, Collins Areba <arebacollins@gmail.com>wrote:

Landrover 110 and for that matter any defender is out, if you intend to go long distance the ride comfort (or NOTT) is just too important an issue. the Range rover classics are ok, except i cant get one on diesel, for something that does about 7km to the liter, ill be spending more on the fuel than i would on the car. Reason i am soo confused on the land cruiser vs the patrol are: 1: Cause jeremy clarkson says so (Landcruiser). 2: Cause some biker chaps chose a patrol on their trans continental trip called long way down (from UK to cape town) as their burdens of beast. Im not soo concerned about resale value though, too bad about that but from experience the good cars dont have a good resale value (Merc BMW... Subaru ...e.t.c ). @ Collins, True. 110's are not built for comfort, but have serious performance. Range Rovers give you comfort (serious legroom), performance, but mediocre fuel consumption. Still, no "serious" outdoor 4x4 is build with comfort in mind. Comfort is for city runners eg Freelander, Rangerover Sport. You may have to compromise a little more on the comfort factor (say, more stop-&-stretch sessions along the way?) the Range rover classics are ok, except i cant get one on diesel, for something that does about 7km to the liter, ill be spending more on the fuel than i would on the car.
Reason i am soo confused on the land cruiser vs the patrol are:
1: Cause jeremy clarkson says so (Landcruiser).

You may have to compromise a little more on the comfort factor (say, more stop-&-stretch sessions along the way?) That aside, google "land rover g4 challenge".

There is a reason you see Hiluxes still running around in Somalia stripped down even if they were bought many years ago. Like someone said, on offroad performance only Landrovers 110s beat it(im looking for one by the way). Problem with Land/Range rovers is that getting a mechanic well equipped to maintain it will cost you an arm and half a leg. and range rovers come with the additional fuel headache. So all in all if cost and comfort are the issue then toyota is the way to go On Mon, Jan 3, 2011 at 2:59 PM, Garr Patronas <garr.patronas@gmail.com>wrote:
